Hitter hits line drive down left field line; left fielder moves over and fields it cleanly; batter-runner, thinking double all the way, heads for second and is thrown out, 7-4. Question: does batter-runner get credit for a hit?

If he caught it in the air no its an out. If he did not and he actually reached 1st base and was thrown out trying to stretch it into a dbl he is credited with a single.
