We are just beginning the recruiting process for our 15 year son (2016) who is a RHP.  We are about to sign him up for a showcase and were wondering if we should sign him up for a secondary defensive position in addition to pitcher. He is a really good hitter and was a decent shortstop until last year when, as a freshman, he had a tough time at shortstop and made a lot of errors.  (We think he had difficulty getting used to the turf field at his high school.)  In the summer, he pitched very well and played shortstop fairly well (but not spectacularly) on the non-turf field.  He wants to pitch in college and we figure that, with all of the very talented shortstops out there, he would never be recruited to be shortstop.  Nevertheless, because he is a very good hitter, we were wondering if a school would be more likely to recruit him if they saw he was a really good hitter (and okay shortstop).  Do the pitchers get to hit at the showcases?  If not, should we sign him up for pitcher and secondarily as shortstop?  Thanks.

It will cost extra for 2 positions. If he's not going to show well at SS don't sign for that position. They may take velocity there also. My son is P and played ss for yrs too. Just moved to OF last yr and has done great-his speed helps. His p coach said OF was good secondary position for him.

Since son is still young I would pay for P only until he gets really good in second position-maybe fall of Jr. Yr then be eval.  At second position.

My two cents.....

Just about every current college player (including pitchers) was a standout hitter at the high school level.  Your son has enough time as a 2016 to continue to develop his skills, and hopefully be noticed by programs looking for pitchers, OF or both.  Keep in mind there probably will come a time when he will have to choose or it will be chosen for him.  Also, there will be more two-way players at the lower levels of college baseball.  It is extremely difficult to be a two-way player at the elite D1 college level.  I would keep this front-of-mind when signing up for a showcase.  So, I'd do it now, but consider focusing on pitching only next year if he isn't getting interest.

If he is a pitcher-first,  it is awfully difficult to put the bat down.  My oldest is a starting college pitcher.   When he comes home from college breaks the first thing he does is pick up a wooden bat and begin hitting off of a tee.

Everyone, thank you for your replies.  Your information is very helpful.

My son is not a very good outfielder and not likely to develop great skills there.  (If anything, he may try to develop his skills at 3rd base.)  Consequently, he won't be putting OF as his secondary position at the showcases.  At the PG and Headfirst showcases, do the pitcher only kids get to do any hitting at all or is it solely pitching?

I'm not sure about Headfirst, but at PG, there is no extra cost for showcasing as a pitcher and a fielder.  If you are only a pitcher, I do not believe you will get a chance to hit.  Since it doesn't cost anything extra, I'd go ahead and sign him up as a fielder and a pitcher.  It won't take anything away from showcasing as a pitcher by showcasing as a fielder as well.  Good luck to you.

My P son did PG showcase and pitched and played OF in games. You usu only get 6 batters to show your stuff. He ran 60, got OF velocity, and hit.  The college camps let u sign up for both at higher price. Son did do one D1 camp and was one of 2 P who showed at second position-both OF. Sometimes it's diff to do both positions depending how camp/showcase is set up. You may be missing out on something first group is doing while your at second position. Never see anyone doing P and Catching which Some HS players do.

3B may work if he has strong and fast arm.

The dual players I have followed at local colleges don't seem to do that for very long.

Giving up hitting/playing defense will be very hard for my son also. He loves to steal and the day is coming soon when that will be over. His dream "job" would to be an outfielder, hit and be a relief pitcher when needed.

Good luck

From our very recent experience I would say if you are going to a PG event where you will be rated, etc. I would try to get an evaluation of your son's projection from a college coach either by going to a camp first, a smaller showcase, etc.

If your son projects as a pitcher for sure have him listed as a primary pitcher.  At the last showcase we had son listed as a primary position player and secondary pitcher.  He pitched one inning (had a quick 8 pitch inning so not a lot to evaluate)  where primary pitchers got 4.  In our case over the last six months we have figured out he gets good looks as a pitcher but almost none as a position player even though he is above average there.

He has done one smaller showcase with much better success and evaluation as just a pitcher only.  IMO there is also some merit to do what you do best.  You feel comfortable and relaxed and  likely will perform much better than if you are stressed out because you just struck out the last inning before it is your turn to pitch.

I say if you project as a pitcher in college skip the other stuff and shine.
