I've had my son playing select baseball for a while now. He is 14 and we are told that we now have to play club ball in order to get into any tournaments. Anyone have any experience with club/independent teams and what do you recommend. I got the impression that if you don't play club, you can't go to any showcase tournaments. I would like to avoid paying $1800.00 for two months of baseball.

Welcome to the Jungle!!!! You have to be part of a major organization like Tigers, Patriots, and Mustangs to get invited to most Showcases. We have been playing club ball since he was 12. It does sound very expensive, but if he wants a chance to play at the College Level and above, that is the sacrifice as parents that has to be made. Just my 2 cents. Keep the change.
So after reading through alot of these posts - and with all things being equal, where do you play, or strive to play?

Sportsdad,

My son is 15 and I started looking at this website a year ago. I received lots of advice and read many posts, (which I suggest you do as well). At the end of the day I came to the conclusion, (based on this advice), that the more exposure you get your son the better, which includes playing in a recognized top program playing in top tournaments and showcases. If your son can get good playing time on a good team in a top program you can't beat it. You can also do other things in the Fall like MSL or go to some college camps. Many posts I've read from parents that have gone the process, as well as discussions with same, confirm that you never know what will be the contact that leads to the scholarship. It is also important to note that the top programs can help as well as they have many contacts with scouts and coaches.

Recognize that it does not matter as much in the 15u age group, but we moved to a top program this last year to get my son exposure within the program, and to establish relationships. I found out that "who you know," or more precise -- who knows your son and seen him play well -- matters.
Welcome SD,

I would just add that your son is just 14. The most important thing is for him to get live at-bats & playing time, not riding the pine on the best team in Dallas. Don't get on a team where he plays one position and takes the field infrequently. That might be the case later, but not at 14. You have to find a team that's the right fit for your son.

Later, when your son matures, you can realistically look at his potential (maybe w/ the help of a PG showcase) and zero-in on the right team and colleges to go after.

Don't forget to look at the "Help Wanted....." section. If your team plays locally, you can always look for a team to particapte with in a PG or other tourn. We've done this for WWBA and BCS tourns. Good luck!
