How are the players selected for the Selectfest showcase? Also, when would a player be invited? I understand that a coach recommendation is required, when should I have my coach do that? Also, how big of a bearing does high school performance have on the selection process?

Being a junior from New Jersey I realize that this showcase is a great one, and I don't want to miss any opportunity from being ill-informed.

Any opinions on this showcase or other good ones are welcome also. Thanks!

You summer coach should be able to help with your Selectfest application.

Look into "Top 100" also. There were a lot of coaches there last year.

"The Hit Doctor" has a three-weekend showcase starting this Saturday that is pretty good. Better for pitchers then catcher, but still a good place to get seen in front of 30 very good coaches.

My son attended an Area Code tryout (Yankees) and SelectFest on consecutive weekends in 2009. A large number of the same scouts were at both events, which occur in late June (right before the July 1 phone contact date). IMO both these events were instrumental in my son being recruited, and ending up where he is today.

Both events will require a recommendation to get into. IMO, high school performance and the HS team you play for, can have a bearing on getting a SelectFest invitation, but your summer team and coaches recommendation will likely be more influential. Certain summer teams will have more clout to help you get into SelectFest. If your son has ability and needs to get seen, these two events can accomplish it very well.
My son went to the Area code tryouts/selectfest/a local top 100 showcase, his summer travel coach was helpful in getting him place in all three. All three were very good with a large number of coaches and scouts in attendance.

One thing to be aware of if your son is a pitcher is that all three of these were close togehter.

Good news is that he did not throw a lot in any one showcase but something I think back and wonder if he should have done just two?
Son went to Top 100 and SelectFest over five days in June 2010, which was plenty since he started showcasing with the Rookies in late May thru Jupiter in October. Most of the coaches migrate from the Top 100 to SelectFest to PG Georgia so conserve your energy and invest your parents money wisely. You can't do every event and perform well. Since your in NJ, I would have your HS and summer coaches contact the SelectFest director and get on a team going to the 17u PG event in GA...good luck!
Thank you for all of the replies!

I am hoping to be lucky enough to be invited to the Area Code tryouts. I have a well connected summer coach, so hopefully that helps.

When should I have my coaches contact SelectFest? I see on their website that they have their 2012 dates set, but the application is still for 2011. Although I play for a small school (Group 2) I did post exceptional numbers last season and received some recognition (All-Area,County, etc.) Will this help my chances?
You should have your application in by January or February at the latest, so get those recommendations taken care of soon.

As I stated before, being All-County/All-Area can help, because your name may be out there (probably more helpful if it is in the Morris County area since that is where the director is from). But recommendations from a HS coach, summer team coach, and scout are probably more important.

Please feel free to PM me if you want to get more specific...
Birdman- Do you recommend using last year's application and getting it in ASAP, or keep checking the website until a new application for next year is posted? Also should I have my summer coach and high school coach fill out one each (so I would be putting in two applications)?

Aleebaba- The most crucial time to go to these events would be the summer going into your Senior year. If you can afford it and get an invite, and your player is polished and ready to be seen, than it would not hurt to go to events like these the summer going into Junior Year
Lasy year our summer coach e-mail the applications to the kids when they came out. Selectfest was later then Top 100.

The kids have already turned in the Top 100 applications for this year. No news on Selectfest yet.

Please don't quote me on the exact cost, but I believe last year Top 100 was $350 and Selectfest was $600. They may not be right, but they are close.
Not sure how to answer the question on the date of the application. When my son filled his out, it was a current date.

Maybe you could try emailing the address on the application to see if you get a reply...

In the 2009 SelectFest my son ended up getting something called a "closers role" and it was $275. The only difference was he threw one inning instead of 2 on the game day. He was able to do all the "showcase type" events on the first day at Diamond Nation (and he even had the opportunity to hit BP). I think the normal price was $400 back then.
