After the gutty little SDSU Aztecs beat # 19 USD on the opening game of a four game series. The local paper reported Coach Hill opted to send a "message" to the team, by inspiring them with a few "choice words".Coach Hill then disembarked the bus and commenced the 8 mile trek back to USD. The Aztecs went on to win 2 of 3 with one game postponed.

Coach Hills response was "Sometimes you have to send a message to the team". I was curious. How do different coaches from around the country send a "message" to their respective teams?

Yes dswann, they are handed down, from coach to coach, generation to generation, never to be viewed or talked about in public for fear of violation of the mythical coaches secrets. If you were truly worthy of knowing such things, you would have been given the secret coaches decoder ring and taught the handshake.

What we should talk about on message boards are things that we are completely wrong about, so narrow minded know it alls can intercede and correct us and then we can give thanks for having our ignorance lifted.

A few choice words usually works. I think a lot depends upon the coach and his demeanor, I think only once in 3 years sons HC used a few choice words.

There were times when he needed to send a message and it was not always because the players didn't do their job.

My sons HC coach often times did things that needed no explanation, but the guys got the idea he was sending a message for something. Jack Leggett tells a story regarding a player being a fork vs. being a spoon (one has to work harder than the other to help feed the person using it). He often put them in situations where they needed to toughen up (collectively), and they all knew what he was referring to. He often did things to take them out of their comfort zone, he was a great motivator in that regard.

IMO, it wasn't just the "choice words" that the coach used, but his leaving the bus and finding his way back himself that probably sent the message.

JMO.

C'mon - What's the message he's sending? Wear comfortable shoes? Sacrifice for your team by saving fossil fuel? Honestly, he just sounds childish to me. His stunt may not have had any effect on beating a team better than them on opening day. Maybe they just got a great pitching performance. I went pretty far in college sports and my coaches were all business... no showmanship and no cryptic messages. The kids play the game. Coaches make out the lineup card.

College: I remember an intense talk from the coach on leadership after a doubleheader loss ....

Billy Smith is our catcher. He's our leader. If he says he wants a hot dog you don't question it. You ask him how much mustard he wants on the dog.

More leadership: The coach had me run poles at practice the next day for laughing.

Lesson: Don't find anything amusing when the coach is steamed.

Talent: I can still bust up friends/former teammates imitating the coach on the hot dog routine and other classics.

I can't say whether the coaches behavior was appropriate or not, the OP asked a question (see above) and I answered, based upon the info I know.

I have seen some coaches do some weird stuff, one in particular on a team son's team played against, got so mad he took the bucket of balls and threw them all over the field, is he a baby? He might be, but his team holds a winning record year after year.
Who knows why he left the bus, maybe he was so ****ed at the team (and himself) it was just best to not share the ride home. We weren't there were we?
I find this interesting because this is not a topic brought up often here, obvious reasons. FWIW, for anyone being shocked at this, don't be. Coaches have all different ways of sending messages.

I dont know about the message he was sending but I bet he was fairly upset that Coach Valenzuela (former pitching coach at USD currently the pitching coach at SDSU) just beat him.

I might want to walk that one off too.

Valenzuela is really good.

That he had a cell phone and he called his wife to pick him up.

USD can play SDSU 10 times and SDSU will win 2 games...SO they won 1.

FWIW, since 2006. SDSU and USD are even with 7 wins apiece. Of course USD is better. Just not when they play the AZTECS

SDSU lost 7 pitchers from last year for various reasons. Their #2 is on the dl and is being replaced by a freshman.

I'am not sure what coach Valenzuela does. But I'am certain USD is going to miss him.
