(shoe company) Preseason All-American. What is it?

I've seen this term used recently:. Preseason All-American in baseball: Sounds silly to me. Is it just some PR gimmick for a shoe company to get its name publicized, or is it really a major honor?

mic...If it is your son on the list, it is a big thing and "really a major honor".

If he's not on the list, then it is "some PR gimmick for a shoe company".
