Alex Rodriguez has an incentive in his contract that when he surpasses HR milestones he gets a 6 million dollar bonus, the first is one HR away.
Now the Yankees dont want to pay, say its a missed marketing opportunity.
Thoughts?

I'm not an A-Rod fan, but if that is in the contract then the Yankee organization should pay up. Not like they can't afford to pay it. If they didn't want to pay it, then they should have never agreed to it.
I'm with the Yankees on this one. ARod brought embarrassment to the organization and has hurt their ability to generate income through marketing by not being able to focus on him. If they celebrate any milestone ARod passes it opens them up to criticism from the public. Maybe give him partial bonus but not the full thing.
I don't know what legal standing the Yankees have to in order to keep from paying him the bonus so he will probably get it.
NO, and I think they should sit his sorry arse so he does't reach that milestone.
A contract is a contract. Pay the man his money.
I find the Arod & Yankee situation extremely interesting. At this time, they both need each other but neither sees it that way. He's going to burn a hole in the Yankees wallet for at least a couple more years at $21M each until his free agent year of 2018. He gets another $6M per marketing agreement incentive for each HR milestone of 660, 714, 755 and tying and breaking major league HR record...possibly up to $30M It is going to be a stretch for him to get to 714 due to his declining skills and health. It remains to be seen if another team would pick him up in 2018.
So, the question has to be asked did PEDs help or hinder ARod overall? It certainly kept him off the field for a while because he was caught and made his body a science experiment for many years. I think he would have more HRs if he would have stayed clean.....kind of ironic when you think about it. JMO.
This was a business deal. The Yankees thought they could make a mint off these "milestone" events marketing the games, hats, etc. They judged wrongly. To my knowledge, there was no "morals" clause in this contract, which is not actually a part of the baseball contract. They bet on ARod, and lost. Bad business decision, nothing to do with the game itself. They are going to have to pay, and will pay substantial legal fees in addition, if they try to fight it.
The $6M bonus is not part of his player contract per se, it's part of a marketing contract. Player's union frowns on incentives tied to milestones in player contracts I think.
Anyway, like a marketing contract between any two business, because something didn't work out to one party's joy, it's not really a way to not pay up.
There will be a negotiation here and there, but Yankees will end up playing a majority of that dough.
A big +1 to that!
If you believe in laws and contracts, yankees pay.
Before anyone sides with the Yankees, they should 1st ask themselves if they honestly believe the Yanks didn’t have a pretty good idea he was using when they signed him in 2003. If the answer to that is an unequivocal “No! They had no inklings of impropriety”, then backing the Yanks is understandable. But I suspect they thought they were getting over and didn’t give a tinker’s damn what he was doing as long as they made their money.
I have to agree with Stats on this one. The Yankees knew, and baseball knew that Arod and a bunch of the others were using. They didn't give a rat's behind until the public found out. Therefore, acting all sanctimonious after the fact is just a bit hypocritical...

Well said, I don't like either party in this one and i actually hope they both fail in massive fashon!!
Pay him. If they really had a problem with his behavior and were embarrassed by his conduct, then they would be sitting him. As it stands, they are benefitting from his play, but don't want to pay out on this contract.
Now, if ARod was really trying to make amends, he would donate the money once the Yankees paid out.
Don't see how the Yanks get around this one. They'll probably end up paying A-Roid what the contract says. Yanks contract was as bad as the original one from Owner Hicks in Texas. Texas was bidding against itself, and the Yankees were bidding against themselves as well.

Players have incentives added to their contract all of the time, so not sure if this was in their contract agreement, that was made several years ago.
Either way, I dont see the yankees winning this war.
Stats, you can say that about a lot of teams at that time. After 2003 some of the best players in MLB shrunk, noticeably. And while we are on the subject, why is A-Rod skewered forever yet, Melky, Johnny Peralta and oh boy Nelson Cruz, the new darling get paid and get a pass on their past use? If people are going to keep out players from the HOF and forever blast them over the use of PEDs then it should be across the board. Especially after it was clearly said to be against the rules, with ever greater suspensions. The newer guys should even be held in greater contempt if the older guys are still paying the price. Oh yea, the Yankees need to just keep quiet and pay him. And his passing of Mays should be noted. Just as I see Nelson Cruz exalted day and night on MLB network.
Update:
Apparently the Yankees aren't going to pay and say they don't have to. Also, from this article it doesn't appear A-Rod really cares...guess we will know for sure in 14 days.

Oh, he cares. He's not just going to let go of 6 million...
Saying as little as possible is the right move for Rodriguez.
If he wins and collects and says, that was the deal we made I am glad the decision went our way and all I want to do is get on with the season and help the team win games.
If he loses he says, I understand the decision but I want to get on with the season and help the team win games.
It won't be that simple of course...but that is the right move.
Of course we are not privy to the actual contract language (unless it has been disclosed somewhere that others are familiar with), but I don't see how a player of ARod's caliber (at least at the time of the contract signing in 2007) signs a contract that says what the Yankees are claiming.
We have the right, but not the obligation, to do something, and that’s it.
They expect us to believe he signed a contract that says the Yankees pay only if they want to? Somehow, they are making ARod look like the better party in this mess.
How about the Yankees return the 2009 World Series trophy that A-Rod led them to? That would seem to be a fair way for the Yanks to start taking a stand against steroid use. If they're keeping the trophy then pay the man his money.
Here is another thing I have noticed. The Yanks are a funny organization when it comes to its stars. Over the course of time they have hammered or had significant disputes with some great players, Maris, Winfield, Berra and Rodriguez. At the same time there are those are simply God's Mantle, DiMaggio, Gehrig and Jeter among others.
It is hard for me to think of another organization that had a falling out with even one of the greatest players in their history much less a handful. Of course the Yanks have had more stars than anyone else but can anyone imagine Musial beefing with the Cards, Banks with the Cubs or Aaron with the Braves?
