Snow day today!!!
I'm on our freshman team and have practiced mostly at 2b, with some work at ss and cf. My favorite and best position is 2b. There is one other guy on the team that has also been working out only at second base. Not to brag or anything, but I"m a lot better than him in all aspects of the game. I'm much faster, stronger, have more range, a better glove, I hit better, I hustle at all times... but in our first 2 scrimmage games, he has started before me. The first game he had 4 errors on easy balls, hit into a double play and popped out. I doubled, walked, had 2 rbi and fielded everything clean. He still started in our second game, when he had 2 more errors. I know it's early but I'm starting to worry that the coach thinks this guy is better or something. Do you think coach is just playing him to see what he can do or what? The same thing is happening to other guys at other positions. Should I say something yet, or wait to see if the same thing happens for our first real game next week?

Last year, my son was in competition for 3B with 3 other guys. He went to the coach -- in a nice way -- and just asked him, "Coach, what is it going to take for me to start at 3B?" The coach was very receptive... don't get me wrong, he still had to work for the position. But, I think it made the coach aware that he was willing to work as hard as he could to get the position.

Just make sure you approach your coach in a reasonable and kind manner so as to not make him defensive!

Good luck!
Woody's son:

Welcome aboard the HSBBW.

TRhit and momandcpa gave you the best advice..be very respectful, tactful, and diplomatic when approaching and talking with the coach. It seems that what is happening to you is a recurring theme with some other players...the coach is most likely trying to get an extra good look at lesser skillled players...these players are integral to the team and I'm sure he wants the best of the rest so as to have a strong team.

In regards to your second question...wait.

Keep us posted, kid.

At least at my son's school, the coach moved the players around A LOT in the scrimmages. Once the "real" games started, he put the players in their positions and rarely moved them. I'm certainly not an expert, but I might wait if I were you. He may just be letting the other kid "dig himself into a ditch" before giving you the position.
One of the other guy's dad commented to my dad that he told his son to hustle as much as me. I guess he noticed how I always run out to my position while most the other guys take their time. When not in the game I warm up the left fielder and chase down foul balls and route my teammates on. I did end up playing half of the game yesterday and 5 innings Saturday, but I want it all. Mad
Every coach is different... what might work in one situation won't work in another. We have no idea in which category your coach falls. What appeared to help my son might hurt you (as BobbleheadDoll pointed out).

Have a good attitude.
Keep hustling.
Realize it is still early in your season. (Here in Texas we have already had our scrimmages, three tournaments, regular season games and one district game).
it may be that its obvious to the coach that you will be the starter, and he's just looking at his reserves to see who will be the most reliable backup. If you're as far ahead of the next guy as you say, he may not need to see that much of you this early in the season.
I'd keep quiet and keep working until the season starts. you'll know where you stand...
I'd go with the majority on this one, scrimmage games are a chance for coach to get a look at everyone, wait until the season starts.

If you do as you say, I am sure your coached has noticed how hard you work.

You have to accept the fact that he may have other things in store for you and the other player. Be patient.
Well I thought i would give you all an update on my situation. We're several games into our season and my teamate that was making all the errors at second has started every game there and continues to be inconsistant on routine plays. I'm starting at either CF or LF and have come in to play 2b a little. The coach said he like it that I can play a bunch of different positions (including catcher). I'm the only one besides guys who also pitch that has played more than one position. That's cool cuz I'm pretty sure I'm going to play every day--as long as I keep hitting good.
