How often and when should a 2016 reach out to a college coach they have been communicating with before the college season started? Do college coaches expect high school players to keep them updated on how their high school season is going? If so, what would you say if your season is not going as well as hoped?  Most teams my son has been in contact with are having subpar seasons themselves so commenting on their performance could be touchy as well.

Yes, a 2016 should be in "regular" contact with the coaches on the player's vetted list of schools.

Some things to share:  mid-term grades, ACT/SAT scores, game results and schedule, Summer showcase schedule, video, visits to campus, etc.  Fill out the online recruiting profile.  Fill out the online Admissions info request form.  Contact Admissions reps for the player's area.  Let the coaches know these things have been done.

Once per month is a reasonable amount of contact in my experience (with a 2012 and a 2016).  Some coaches will reply and others will not.  It doesn't matter at this point.  Coaches have different recruiting styles and timeframes.

For the majority of players, the onus is on them to show their interest to the coach / school.

Perhaps he could say something like, "I continue to follow your team with great interest. As part of that, I know that you're putting together strong recruiting classes for the next several years. I'm confident that I have the traits and abilities that would fit comfortably in those excellent classes."

Coaches are always intent upon building for the future. The fact is that only a small percentage are satisfied with their current performance; almost regardless of where it stands.

Best of luck to your son!
