Pros & cons of sidearm pitching please? Coach is looking at having my son do some pitching, which he has done in the past in relief, because he likes his natural sidearm motion and release. He normaly plays third & catches and has good velocity. Anything I should watch for him to do or not do while pitching?

DONT LET HIM THROW SIDEARM! I used to pitch/catch sidearm. My elbow then started killing me and taking ibeprufen became a daily task. I then took a year off of baseball to let my arm fully heal. My catching coach does not let me throw sidearm. Every time I drop my arm angle I can still feel it. Don't ruin your son's baseball career!
Throwing sidearm is fine; don't let these guys keep your son from trying it. The relationship between the shoulder and elbow (elbow higher than shoulder) should remain the same as if he is throwing over the top.....in other words, he must lower (bend) his torso over in order to keep that relationship. I have coached several pitchers who throw this way. My son is a Divion I pitcher who throws overhand and sidearm...never an arm problem, shoulder or elbow. Like with any pitches, proper mechanics enable a pitcher to keep a healthy arm.
Eagledad.
if your son throws naturally side arm, there should be no problems.
Pitching is like beauty!
"it's left up to the eye of the beholder".
Basically no one can tell you what is the correct way, or not the correct way to pitch a baseball.
have him throw, then get him lessons, if they try to change his delivery find someone else.
don't listen to some of what has been said.
Side arm pitchers have no more mechanical issues then other type of pitchers. it's style and what's in vogue.
sidearm pitchers are just far and few between, it's no more dangerous then any other style.
if throwing sidearm was more problematic there would be no Pitchers in Korea and Japan.
Heck, you cant even call them side armers. their submariners.
