My son recently told me that (at 16) he is having the most fun he has ever had playing baseball. He's playing on a new team without superstar players or big name coaches. It is a group of baseball players playing baseball, and loving it.

And the icing on the cake - and I truly believe it is icing - they are having an amazing season, despite the volunteer coaches and the lack of a team ace.

I just wanted to share this because thanks to input from this forum, I have worked at relaxing a bit, not micromanaging so much. You stopped me before I ruined it for him.

And now my son has reminded me that the best thing about baseball is that it is fun.

Agree. Many times, the stud is more of a nuisance to a team. Especially when it becomes about them.

My son played on some pretty good summer teams and we had the most drama when we had a "stud" and the dad on the team. If you got solid players and good coaching, you don't need these studs.
Last weekend, my middle son was home for the weekend between WWBA and BCS. My older son put together a team of local kids that had played against each other in high school and actually many did not like each other as players for a small local tournament. They had everything from 2 D1 players to 2 14 year olds on the same team. They actually coached themselves and had a ball. They played loose but great. No pressure. No scouts.
It was good to see my two sons play together for the last time. They went 3-0. My son said he loves the competitive spirit of showcase ball and playing great competition but it was good to just play with a group of friends and have fun. They were having so much fun with each other that it was almost obnoxious. I am all for the competitive baseball world but it reminded me that every now and then they just need to play for the fun of it with no pressure. He reminded me he would not want to do it all the time but it was good for a weekend.
The team finished the regular season today with a record of 21-3, best Junior Legion record in the state. My son and I talked about how horrible they were in their first scrimmage, but how they came together over the season.

Now on to the post-season, with the honor of being the #1 seed in the state tournament. Just a bunch of teenage boys playing baseball.
