Son is a high school freshman. He played JV this year. Probably due to time and field constraints JV practices consist mainly of soft toss to each other in the cages, running, and the catchers catch bullpen for V while others shag balls for V. Son feels practices are very unproductive - yet time consuming.

Many parents are frustrated and are considering leaving school to go private. I would prefer not to go the private route this year since money is tight at the moment. We will probably send him to private for junior and senior unless coaching staff changes.

Playing time is not a complaint, he plays every other game. However, when looking at the big picture there are only 14 games in the JV season - therefore he will be playing 7 games during the spring season. In my opinion only a few games for 4 months of unproductive practices.

My question is: if he doesn't switch schools for sophomore year what is your opinion of playing for his summer team, finding a fall team, and taking off spring to train and focus on hitting (which he couldn't do this spring due to the time commitments of his hs baseball)? Also, if he does that will it raise a red flag with colleges that he didn't play 4 years for high school?

Here is my thinking:

He should get on a good summer team and fall team no matter what he does next spring in high school. Everyone says the summer season is where you get seen so find a good team that would offer a lot of exposure.

As far as sitting out a high school season? My son is a junior and has talked to three college coaches during the high school season. All three have asked how his high school season is going. I would hate to think of the look they would give them if he says he isnt playing. You know the next question would be why. Your son would have to give an answer they probably dont wanna hear. I would think it would be a red flag, but what do I know.

Also, if he didnt play high school ball, could he really focus on hitting more then he is now. My son practices every school day from Feb 29th until at least the middle of May. That would be around 50 days of practice, taking out game days, but adding the occasional weekend day. Every practice they are throwing, doing drills and hitting, (even game days they do this). What program could your son do that could take the place of throwing and hitting in a cage every day? Including the live action he sees in games? Unless he gets very few swings in a cage, and only plays catch for 5 minutes, I wouldnt think a practice could be that unproductive.
Your son should play in a quality summer program. He should play school ball for the preseason (to summer) workout if nothing else. It may annoy the coaching staff if your son thinks he can leave and come back at will. It doesn't show commitment to the program. If the school is solid academically, don't transfer over school ball. Summer ball is 90% likely to be the avenue to college ball assumng your son has the talent.

Can't believe that folks would consider transferring to a private school over baseball? Most college coaches discount HS play and stats. My son's public high school team is awful (currently 3-7) and the coach is a nice guy but knows nothing about baseball. We just grin and bear it and get use it as practice to get ready for the summer on our travel team.
