Slam Baseball & Fastpitch Academy is located in Joliet just off I-80 at 2092 Oak Leaf St. The phone is (815) 725-7526. Hours are M-F 3pm to 8pm and weekends from 9am to 6pm. Slam is owned by Toby Rumfield, catcher for the Atlanta Braves MLB Team in the 1999 and 2000 seasons, was drafted in 1991 as the 63rd overall pick by the Reds.

Slam has three indoor 70' cages with portable mounds, a pitching lane and tee cage. One-on-one lessons from current pro scouts are $90/hr, and lessons with varsity baseball coaches from area schools are $45/per 1/2 hour.

Slam also offers hourly rentals, live pitching BP on Saturdays and open hitting for high school students weekdays from 3:30pm to 5:00pm. Clinics include a pitcher and catcher conditiong series.

Slam isn't a sporting goods store with cages, it is a baseball and fastpitch academy that seeks to help its athletes take their game to the next level--be it college or the pro draft.

I thought I would just offer a bit of clarification on the comment above - not sure if it was meant as a joke or not.

First, I'll just say that the post by Slam, about Slam is very appropriate and not a problem at all! I think it's great when new baseball facilities let our members know about what they have to offer, in a helpful and factual way - no SPAM, no hype, no pretending to be "just a parent who discovered this wonderful place" etc.

When is it a problem?

That's a gray area and I can't offer precise guidelines, but an example would be when a baseball business seems to be SPAM-ing our readers by plastering news of their events in 10 forums instead of judiciously placing an announcement in 1 or 2 forums.

What about sponsors, what ARE they allowed to do?

Sponsors/advertisers are asked to follow the same forum rules as everyone else. Paying for a banner or little logo ad on the side of a forum does NOT earn them the right to SPAM our members. I am pretty sure that if you look at the current ads in this forum (Illinois), then match those ads up with a member ID, you will see that those sponsor/members are polite and professional, using restraint in occasionally announcing an event or talking about their business.

If you do see a business SPAM-ing our members with announcements plastered all over, or constant promotion of their organization, feel free to use the little Report This Post button in the lower right corner (triangle with an exclamation point). I will receive a notification and check it out.

I hope this helps to clarify a bit!

do you have any machines for bp or is it all for live bp? and also you mentioned open hitting for high school students on weekdays from 3:30-5:00pm..what about for college players too?

We have ATEC and Iron Mike for those who love the pitching machines. Our Saturday hitting clinic is all live pitching (mostly 1/2 cages with an L-screen) and broken down by age groups with staggered starting times.

As for the open hitting weekdays, we have the facility reserved for one high school on Monday and Wednesdays, but on Tuesday, Thursdays and Fridays we are open to any player high school age or above who wants to hit. The cost is $5 per person and we usually get enough players so that it can all be live pitching to one another. So, if you and some friends would like to come and hit--we'd love to have you. We almost always also have some varsity baseball players working that can do live pitching at other times, too.

Thanks for asking and we hope to meet you soon.

FYI to members in the southwest burbs:

Slam recently moved to a new facility abut 1 mile from the previous location. Slam's new facility is 15,000 square foot (more than 3X the size of the old facility) and includes a 100' x 120' padded turf infield with no wires, cages or obstructions. There still are some batting cages, as well, upstairs. We've also changed our name to reflect our newly expanded focus.

We now are Slam Sports Performance and offer sports performance training classes with a focus on baseball & softball. The program was designed by pro pitcher Nate Sevier (who pitched a no-hitter last season with the Joliet Jackhammers) and pro catcher Dennis Blackmon (who played this past season in the Boston Red Sox organization). Both Sevier and Blackmon work full time at Slam and personally run the training program. Slam offer sports performance training 6 days a week. Also, lessons, team rentals, an indoor 6 on 6 baseball league, and has a daily open hitting session for high school and college players for just $5. Check out the website at www.slamsportsperformance.com or call (815) 725-7526 for more info.
