I usually haven't had much problems throwing strikes in my pitching career, but this year, after a delayed start, I've struggled to consistently throw strikes. (I had medial epicondylitis for the first 3 weeks of spring season, the first time I've ever had to miss significant time during a season) And the poor control is REALLY noticeable in the first inning. I tend to walk at least a batter or two in the first inning (and a lot of times it leads to a big deficit), but usually I can settle in after about 20-25 pitches. I've never had this problem before and I don't know if its because of a poor warmup or if its mental or what......But what do you guys do when you can't find the plate?

My son had the exact same problem, first inning particularly when we were home was even a bigger problem. The solution is to throw the first inning in the bullpen. Pick out a few of the tough hitters on the opposing team and "pitch" to them in the bullpen. If you need to have a team mate step in as a simulated batter.

Good Luck!
I agree with NIC15. Pitchers should feel like they have already pitched and inning before they start the first. They need to work up a sweat while they incorporate a great warmup routine that consists of jogging, lunges forward and backward with twists, ballistic stretching etc. That all should be done before a pitcher begins to pick up a ball and warm up.
Also, all the mental side, you cannot tell yourself that you throw badly the first inning or else it will continue to happen. You always throw well no matter what.
