I’m wondering if some Poster(s) wouldn’t mind giving me an overview of the High School baseball calendar in Southern California, or more specifically, in the San Fernando Valley?

I’m aware that the High School season runs from Feb to May. Looks like most schools have Freshmen, JV and Varsity teams. For Summer and Winter seasons, it looks like there’s something called VIBL?
In the Fall, I’ve heard of something called Scout teams. How do these teams identify players? And would a player play exclusively with a Scout team for a period of time? Are their Freshmen to Seniors playing on Scout teams?

Are showcases prevalent in Southern California? Are there ‘must-attend’ Showcases? When do players attend (Sophomore? Jrs?)?

Thanks in advance for any and all feedback.

Most HS teams have some sort of fall program or “winterball”. It is pretty much a year round activity particularly at some of the hot bed baseball schools, which there are many in the Valley. They will have some sort of rolling tryouts as the other sports come off so after football season and then after basketball.

VIBL is a summer league of HS teams. These are run and managed by the HS coach or their minions. You can Google VIBL and find their website. Scout ball is typically a Jr/Sr activity. There are several teams from the Valley/TO area. There is a summer Connie Mack wood bat league that has the highest level of baseball you will find, but many HS coaches want their kids in VIBL, so it depends on the HS as to what you do. Most of the Connie Mack kids are Jr/Sr’s and some first year college players. Scout teams are mostly Jr/Sr and there are tryouts for them usually in the late summer/early fall. Scout games are usually on Sundays, except for some weekend tournaments.

I would have a chat with your HS coach about his approach to baseball and college recruiting, some will help and some will hinder, depends on where your son is going. I would also not take what he says for gospel, just listen.

There are a number of events your son should go to, but if he is a freshmen you have plenty of time to figure out where to go.

Good Luck!
Very interesting information. Thx again BOF. If OK, I may be interested in soliciting your thoughts on specific HS programs in the Valley. I'll do via PM. My son is a Middle School'er, so I'm trying to research next steps, find out which questions to ask, etc.

If you don't mind me high-jacking my own thread; did your son play multiple sports in HS? Or when did he specialize in baseball?
He played basketball for two years and the dropped it, mostly due to the fall recruiting activities.
From my favorite poster here "play two sports until the competition convinces you otherwise"

You have plenty of time, there are a number of posters here who's son's played in the Valley can can give you good insight into some of the programs.

Good Luck!
