Chatroom, there aren't any rules, this is cyberspace. So I suppose some use the "anything goes" philososphy.
I find it rather DiSISTURBING when an adult has to come into chat using another persons name and I find it STRANGE when an adult has to come in and present himself as a HS player.

JMO.

But does anyone else find this DISTURBING or STRANGE?

This is a common chat room problem. I've heard there are rooms that have an owner who initiates the chat and entrance is by invite. At the same time it can be an open chat, but this at least gives you an option selfish as it might sound.

a bit strange yes, but compared to other chat room behaviors in the news lately that would prolly fit into the "least disturbing" catagory Eek

anyway, just a suggestion to all who use chatrooms . . .

sit down with your kids over the holiday and have THEM give you the chatroom safety lecture that you gave 'em years ago Smile

Since I was in the chat room last night with the incident that has inspired TPM's post, I'll say I think it's disturbing and strange.

Last night a poster who typically posts some very odd things came into the chat room and used another poster's screen name. Julie is aware and checking into the incident.

I suppose we should all remember to be careful when we're in the room to verify we're talking to who we think we're talking to. Good reminder, Bee to mention to our kids if any of them go to chat rooms.
I wasnt at the chat, so not sure what happened, but I can tell by TPMom's post, something un-nerving occured.

I agree with cong:

The same problem could be occurring right here in the message board as well.

So true, so true.
We get very relaxed on this " safe " little cyber space spot of ours. Its been a true blessing for most of us, but perhaps a little warning/caution to keep our senses about us, are in order.
Lets all stay alert.

I agree with you. Big Grin However trying to prove you are an adult and an adult trying to be a HS player are 2 different issues.

I am the first to find humor in all situations. I don't find this to be so funny.
A week or two ago we had someone in there impersonating one of the top HS prospects in the country.

Posting as someone else and coming into the chat room as someone else, to me, two seperate issues.

The really funny part is that it is SO easy to figure out, so no one is fooling anyone but themselves. So in turn, it makes them look even more foolish.

I'll keep my thoughts to myself, but as you read this, do know that many of your fellow websters do not look upon it as normal.

OUCH.

My son has been deemed the only adult male in the family, however, if you cut me in half and counted the rings, you could see I am a "Cold War" seedling.

Some use impersonation as a game, trickery, rudeness, or a smartarse angle. However, some have a problem with owning up their own honest feelings, do not want to hurt someones feelings, or be held responsible with their honesty among virtual friends. For many this is a hard excuse to swallow. I have read where many who post on websites have already gone out of their box and in normal face-2-face encounters they would be labled the "shy one" in the corner who says nothing. With the WWW they can safely leave that box but keep the anominity. After a while they have made virtual friends but still harbor that shyness. Now they want to expand and the only way out is by picking up a new name. This is so dangerous, not only with Internet ramifications, but also psychological repurrcussions. I guess my point is that while there are issues with multi-web personalities, there might be more behind the name then you are aware of.

However, the cold and "real" side of rz1 says it's wrong regardless.
