Our son just this past weekend had a one on one visit with the head coach of a D3 highly ranked baseball program. He had him come to a actual practice so he can show him what they do. He did not play, he did not do anything except talk to the coach for almost an hour. Our son went to their invite only prospect camp this past January there (he was invited), He is MIF and the coach was positive in his review and saw him again over the summer in his travel team. He told he to reach out to him in Oct and he did and they met.

He told our son in this order. What is your SAT and ACT Scores? Where do you rank?, did you apply? (they give Academic Scholarships only.) (Please note this school is not cheap and the average GPA of the baseball players as well as all other atheltes is around 3.85.) Our son applied and will know if he is accepted around Dec 15th or so. He said if he is accepted to follow up with him to get the process going. Our son carries above average scores in the SAT, ACT and GPA of 4.00 and is a National Honor Scholar and in all AP Classes and this school has engineering which is going to be his major. He was told by the admissions based on his academics alone that he will receive scholarship money between 27000 to 34000 each year upon acceptance and the school is about 46000.00 so we will also be paying the balance from his college fund and other scholarship money.

He can go anywhere but he wants to finish out his college experience playing what he loves. He knows he will not play in the MLB and his maturity knowing this makes us proud. He has seen many of his classmates in the last 2 years chasing the dream playing JUCO that went nowhere and now most of their credits don't transfer and they are going to school longer than they thought.

This school is ranked number 1 in the west in academics and their baseball program number 4.

The coach told him he can see he has the talent to play at the level they have so told him that if he was accepted then he can see him on the team and the official process will start in January.

My question: Do coaches tell it like it is? My son is positive but I was not there and when are we a part of it. He is a Senior and 18 years old so I was told technically we don't have to be there at all.

Sounds like good stuff, only thing I might add is that if your son applied Early Decision or Early Action - given the 12/15 accept/denial date, the HC would seemingly be tracking, or have flagged his application as a recruit, and coach would receive notice from admissions as well upon acceptance.  So, your son would not really need to notify coach of acceptance decision, per se.  Subtle difference.

#1 in the West Region for D3 in terms of academic rank usually means Pomona College, Harvey Mudd or Cal Tech - but they are not top 5 baseball programs (Pomona makes playoffs every few years, might be thought of in the 12-18 range in the West?)

Facts:

1. Son went to a camp of #4 D3 team in Jan 2013

2. Son was seen on travel team in summer and told to get back to the Trinity coach in October 2013

3. Son and coach meet in Oct 2013 and coach asks then about SAT/ACT scores, GPA and whether son has applied to the school

4. Coach says if son is accepted, he can see him on the team.

Conclusions:

1. Son was not actively recruited. Top D3 teams are recruiting heavily in summer/fall by proactively communicating with players, and are supporting applications of their top recruits. They are not asking their top recruits in Oct what their SATs are.

2. Son has a chance to make the team as a non-recruited player, or what a "walk-on" would be in D1. Programs like Trinity want to win, so no reason to believe he would not be given a fair shot. Check the roster size. Trinity has, what, 50+?

Green Light,

If you are correct that this is Trinity University, I wonder how you could/can be so decisive on on how Coach Scannell does his recruiting of key players.  They did not even approach BOF's son until February of his senior year.

Would you be willing to share the background and experience you have with Trinity U which were used to list both your facts and conclusions as they then get applied to one particular program and coach and then apply those to this poster and his son?

Was/is your son a Trinity recruit? Have you coached at or against Trinity?

Someone I know well, doesn't matter if it was my child or not, was recruited by Trinity. My experience is that Coach Fregosi, not Coach Scannell coordinates recruiting for Trinity.

I could be wrong that the school is Trinity, but It is #1 in the West Regional University rankings done by US News, and a top national D3 program. Experience I have is that Trinity is active at Stanford Camp and others and follows up proactively with recruits in summer/fall.

Does this mean every top recruit was landed in the summer/fall? No. I am talking about the general situation of what to expect, not the exceptions. I am sure the example you provided is true

After the information about Coach Fregosi being the recruiting coordinator, I would propose the balance of the  facts and conclusions you expressed are  open to question.

What if I were to suggest that Trinity uses the Stanford Camp. AZ Fall Classic and plenty of hard work in Texas to identify their top recruits.  Those are usually players they believe have D1 options, including the Ivy league schools.  Because they expect some of that group to end up at D1 programs, Trinity does not actually begin the intense recruiting of those at the top of their list until the D1 period is close to an end and the NLI process tells them which of the top recruits are still available to them.

Once they have that, they then do exactly what occurred here, arrange to get the player on campus, watch a practice, meet with Coach Scannell and work a plan and time frame going forward, if the interest is mutual, at that point.

Is there anything in my framework which ends up with you on the other side?

Everything I have said represents exactly what I have seen. You have seen something else.

Coach Fregosi is the person who sent out the emails and made the calls I am aware of this past summer. He was also the one at Stanford Camp

Glad you have set the record straight and pointed out that in fact my experience is the exception at Trinity. That is what is so great about this board. Son of original poster is in good shape under your scenario, and that will be a good thing

Oh c'mon. I didn't set any record straight for the OP.  I asked some questions about your facts and conclusions.

The OP didn't post whether his son met with Coach Fregosi, Coach Scannell or both. What I postulated is an approach which has been used for some of the programs top recruits to counter a perspective the approach is indicative of a walk-on.

It sounds to me like you are quite familiar with both Coach Fregosi and Coach Scannell.

The real question in the OP, which has yet to be answered(assuming the school is Trinity) is "do coaches tell it like it is."  What is your experience with Coach Fregosi from the Stanford Camp and the follow up and "telling it like it is?"  I really think that is what the OP wants to know.

I don't know Coach Scannell from Adam! Where did you get that from??

A player I know well had proactive contact from Coach Fregosi after Stanford Camp. Deal was that if the player had any interest in TU, Coach Fregosi would set up a visit. This is in the July timeframe for these exchanges. After a few back and forths, the player did not pursue the situation.

Coach Fregosi appeared completely forthright in all his communications.

If I had an answer for the question "do coaches tell it like it is?".....except for the boring observation that sometimes they do and sometimes they don't....I would have posted it already. I don't think I have any value added on that one.

Happy to respond to other inquiries...seriously, not being flip.

Green, you must be a "seer" because I don't know how you divined that TU was the school the poster is referring to - but, now it sort of makes sense.  Although #1 in the ranking you mention is a great distinction for a great school, it is not really the same as "#1 in academics in the west"

Like2, not a seer, but thanks for the shout out.

From experience noted above with TU, did a lot of research about them just months ago. The fact that they are ranked #1 for Regional Universities in the West by US News somehow stuck with me. That, plus the #4 D3 baseball ranking, kinda raised the odds in favor of my guess.

I still could be wrong.

Bottom line, I know they go after certain kids in the summer. If it happened to the kid I know, it surely had to happen to others
