As anyone who has a pitcher probably knows, the "90mph Club" is what every pitcher wants to be a member of.  Thursday night, son threw in a game for the 2nd time this year.  First time he's thrown in front of a gun since late last summer.  He hit 90 4 times...and 91 once.    Needless to say he was thrilled.  Gave up 1 hit...with 9 K's.  Probably going to have to order him a 90mph club T-shirt

playball.....you are exactly right.  90 is a nice number....but most better HS batters should be able to put that in play if that's all you throw.  Fortunately his change up and curveball are working real well right now.  Nothing like a 78mph change on an 0-2 count after throwing 2 FB's in the upper 80's....the look on the kid's face was he walks back to the dugout with a K in the book is priceless

True, but 92-93 is going to get you looks that 86-89 won't even if you are getting lit up.

He's committed to a D1....and hoping to play 2B...lol. He's hitting .575 with 2 HR's in 6 games....and his college coach just found out about the 91 yesterday...so we'll see.....  He really didn't throw much over the winter so I was shocked he hit 91 this early.  As far as scouts, he's going to college so scouts aren't an issue.  He's 6'0, 175, so I don't think we'll have that problem...unless he hits 95 in the next month or so

I try to just take people's word for things on here after all I was not there.  But I can tell you I have been at this a long time and only once saw a 90+ guy get lit up.  When I hear this I just cant help but wonder.  Now a 90+ guy who didn't have it that day and wasn't actually throwing 90+ different story.  And I do come from a baseball hotbed.  And no the majority of good  even great hs teams can't routinely handle that.

Let's not minimize this.  There is a reason scouts couldn't care less about the 'crafty' pitcher.  CAUSE THEY ARE NOT AS GOOD!!  kudos to your son!  Best of luck.

I have seen 90 plus guys lit up multiple times in HS. I have coached several that did. When you can't command and have to throw over the heart. When you have to let up to get it over. When there is no movement and you can't get a breaking pitch close.

I watched Matt Harrison LHP 90-94 get lit up twice his Sr year because he couldn't command. We lost both games. I watched Chris Luck 91-94 get lit up in the State playoffs because he couldn't throw anything but a 4 seam fastball for a strike. I watched my own team light up Chris Archer. I saw Jason Neighborgahl get lit up because he couldn't throw a strike. After walking guys he came over the heart and got knocked out in 3 innings. I have been to WWBA and seen very talented arms hammered for the same reaasons. I have coached in numerous HS games where a 90 guy who couldn't pitch that day was humbled by a good HS team.

I don't know about your area. But in the better HS ranks here in NC it is not uncommon. These guys face this type of velo all summer in showcase ranks playing with the Dirtbags, Cubs, Canes, etc, with wood bats. Do they get lit up as often as the guys that don't? No.

I come from joliet, IL Originally.   My high school has produced more big leaguers than any other high school in the state of Illinois.  The general area is ranked 3rd in the nation per capita for producing draft picks.  Seen and coached many kids who were drafted.  Many 90mph guys going against many hitters who would also be drafted.  D1's everywhere you look.  Maybe it comes down to the definition of 'lit up'.  If you walk three and then groove one for a bases clearing double I don't call that being lit up.  its one hit.  I call that poor command.  With a kid out there throwing in the 90's I doubt you will very often see a team get 8 runs on 10 hits in five innings.  Thats getting lit up.

Did you say your son was a primary second baseman?  You guys must have an outstanding shortstop.  Very rare to see a HS 2B with a 90 mph arm.

PG....he's the SS on his HS team.  My point about 2B was that his RC has told him he'll get the opportunity to earn a spot going both ways in college....and I don't think that athletically he's a college SS. (Maybe 3B).  The statement about possibly going both ways was made last fall when up to that point he had topped out at 87.   I guess we'll have to see
