My son is at a division II JUCO 5 hours away. He's one of 50 players on the fall team. They play a limited fall schedule (20 games). As a freshman he's seen very limited action - maybe a half dozen innings and 4 at-bats. Certainly a change from HS when he usually got 4 at-bats in every game as a starter.

The fall schedule doesn't have many "away" games but when the team does travel, the coach only takes about 25-30 players. Up until now, he has not "qualified" for the "travel" squad.

Yesterday he calls me late in the afternoon:

"Dad, what are you doing?"

"Working."

"Are you sitting down?"

"Uh, yeah.....wait a sec, you made the travel squad?"

"Yep!"

"Congrats!"

The best part is they are traveling to Richmond on Sunday - only an hour away from us. Woo Hoo!

We know he probably won't get much playing time, but it will be great to see him and not have to spend an entire weekend on the road.

Thanks everyone! Wife has been talking about nothing else since I told her (he called me first since she works nights and was sleeping). She even said, can we skip Saturday and go directly to Sunday? LOL!

It's gonna be great to see him regardless if he plays or not (though I'm sure he will). Even though he wasn't around much when he was "home", I still miss my "bud". Out of 4 children he was the only boy.

Never realized how much I would miss him until he was gone (and I have one other in college as well - his 25 yr old sister is in her senior year at ODU).
Well, it wasn't a great day for the team - lost both games, but it was good to see our son and he did great for the limited action he saw (3 innings and two at bats) against a Div I University vs his Div II JUCO. He had a single, scored a run and got on base via a HBP in their second game. Not a bad day for a freshman.

Ya got that right! Too bad it was their last game for the fall season (limited to 20 games). They finished the fall season 16-4.

The next three days they are having an intrasquad "tournament" known as the "Blue/Gold Tournament". Coach splits the team in two and they play each other. I think they get a few weeks off and then it's off season conditioning until the semester ends in mid December. Spring season starts in early February.
Yeah, that's what I've been telling him. When you get the opportunities, make the most of them.

I did have a chuckle though. There were scouts there to look at some of the opposing team pitchers and while I saw some decent pitching, it paled in comparison to what I've watched on my son's varsity team the past few years. The Div I pitchers were in the high 80's, maybe 90. Not quite the same as watching my son's former teammate who threw in the mid-90's his senior year (HS) - he was drafted by the Rays back in June.

We won't see any of the intrasquad tournament. As I mentioned in the original post, his school his 5 hours away (by car).
