He was seen by the Coach recently and the Coach has offered Son a spot. Our Son was not sure that he still wanted to continue to play until the middle to end of his Highschool season. SO this is good new that there is still someplace out there. The question I have is that the Coach said all Scholarship money is gone now. This School is out of County so it will be almost double the price of the more local one. Our son is going to be paying the tuition himself with us reimbursing him if grades are good. So this could be real tough on his pocketbook. he really doesn't want to contact the more local school because he is excited to play for this other school. Are there anyways around paying more for the tuition if the Coach says all money is gone at this point? I wish Son had gotten started on this whole process earlier!!

First of all congratulations to your son. To get offered a chance to pursue this further is wonderful for him whether he inevitably chooses to do so or not.

A few thing to consider.

1-Why does being out of county affect the tuition? Is it because it is farther away and son cannot live at home? Is it that the school is simply more expensive?

2-Has son checked into any and all other scholarship and grant money available? This could be anything from academic money, local sholarhips etc.

3-Is there a possibility for scholarship money next year if son does well this year? Perhaps this would make a difference to you.

4-Can you afford the difference? If so, is it worth it to your son to do this? Will he regret paying a few thousand dollars more 20 years from now when he looks back on his college experience.

5-Don't forget to factor in all the other differences like academic programs etc. This is not a baseball only consideration.

The bottom line is simple - where does he really want to go to school. Perhaps in the long run it will be worth the money spent.

Best of luck deciding.
AParent, I would guess it would be higher cost because he would be an out-of-district student. I believe community colleges are set up with districts with different prices in and out of district. That's just like going to a state school and going to an out-of-state school. You'll normally pay more going out of state to a school than if you were to live in that state.
Congratulations to your son! The first thing I would do is have my son contact the coach and present him with the “problem” of the higher out-of-county tuition. It’s possible the coach could get that waived. Understand that these coaches and colleges deal with these types of issues quite often and have a much better understanding of how this all works. As they say ---- put the ball in their court.

Thank you. That is what I thought. He will actually go to the College next week with his Dad to talk to to the Coach in person. It probably will better to do then. Hopefully they want him enough to help with the out of County fees. If not I would encourage him to go to the one in our County I think.
