As a middle round draft choice last year, mine is clinging/clawing by his finger nails to stay with his organization even at the lowest levels. Yesterday started with news he found terribly disappointing. Later that morning he was told he was being called up to play with the AAA team. Climbed the bus for the ride to the Yankee's minor league facility only to find out they were facing Randy Johnson in his last Spring training assignment. Ends up starting at SS. After fighting off 2 fastballs and just missing a third that he caught up with and fouled straight back, he knows what is coming and strikes out on the slider, (he says is much more wicked in real life than TV), lines out, and ends up on ESPN highlights last night. What a ride this life in basebll can provide.

infielddad,

Outstanding story - thanks for sharing that one. I got goose bumps just reading it. Your son bat righty or lefty? Please tell me he is not a lefty Smile Ask John Kruk or Kenny Lofton sometime how wicked RJ is as viewed from the left side. Obviously, it takes guts to stand in against him no matter which side of the plate you bat from.
infielddad,

Sounds like you have a great deal to be proud about. Even your K's are looked at as bbscout will tell you. By the way you described the at bat it sounds like to me that your son had a Quality At Bat (QAB) off of one of the best pitchers in any league.

Congratulations to your son and I honestly hope someday he gets up and stays up.

That reminded me of a story I heard about Larry Bowa, who went undrafted out of High School. His first game in the minors shook him up to the point that, after the game, he told the coach he wanted to quit. He thought he could never hit pitching like he saw that night, and it would only get better in the show. Apparently Nolan Ryan on a rehab assignment made him look silly. Sounds like your son did a bit better!
