It surprised me today walking up to the field this evening and seeing my son on the bump. It was our first home game of the season (and first game that wasn't cancelled!)against a cross town rival. This was officially sons first high school game. Anyways, after 5 nerve-racking innings (for me) son came away with a 9-3 lead and we ended up winning the game for his first win as a high schooler. I am sure many of you have had this wonderful and yet anxious moment. Anyways....I can breathe again,,,whew!

It makes it a special moment for son because I found out that the opposing team found out before the game that my son- a "freshman" was pitching and they were going to creme him. After the game the other team was silent and my son...he was silent too- humble and leave the talk on the field. It ended up to be a great show of sportsmanship by both ball clubs who really dislike each other quite a bit.
GBM, same thing happened to my son in the first game that was totally "his". Pitched an inning in the his first game, 3 in his 2nd. His first game that he was told, "this is yours" was against the #6 team in the state in the highest classification. They actually wound up playing for the state championship at the end of the season. You could hear the other coach yelling at the kids that our team had no respect for them because we were throwing a 9th grader at them. Not even a big 9th grader (he was like 5'8", 150 lbs.). Their coach was telling his team he wanted them go out and knock my son out of the game. Son threw a complete game and beat them 7-5. They were certainly silent after the game. In fact, they were shell shocked. It was really pretty cool.

So, I know what you are talking about. I was wound up so tight, I couldn't sit still. Son was cool as a cucumber. Once again, Congratulations on the win and good start to the season. Hope the rest of the season goes as well.
Congratulations to your son for his achievement!

My son is in also his first year of HS at a new (2nd year) HS, and like your boy, is having fun and success so far. With the school fielding a V team for the first time this year there are plenty of opportunities for the younger players and everything is a first in school history (first W, first save, first double, etc). So, there are some cool achievements the boys can keep in their memories for years to come.

A good friend who has already been through this process with his boy routinely reminds me savor every moment as it goes by quickly. Accordingly, I try to enjoy each and every play, AB and pitch, and take things as they come. Good and bad.

Best of luck for continued success to all of our boys in their first year of HS ball!

It can vary, but if the pitcher appears undersized, or otherwise invokes a feeling in the batters that they should be able to jack one out, I think it generally helps the pitcher. The more the other team holds mini-meetings on how to "stay back" or how to time it better, the better it is for the pitcher. All of the pressure is tranferred to the hitting team.
