Coach May, what score would you give Harv? Before you answer, check to see if Harv is male or female. I wouldn't want folks like RJM to think he/she didn't get what they were entitled to. Hey, pretty soon ole Uncle Sam will dictate to me which sport I can or cannot buy season tickets for. If I buy one for any male sport, by God I had better buy two for women's.

A sure sign that one can't make a logical and coherent argument is when he resorts to a ridiculous argument.

Sorry PG....didn't get the PM....I was just wondering about scores?

Yes , I am concerned about "team tournament" schedules coming out the day before the start of the tournament. Individual "show cases are different but "teams" are not going to sin up the night before.

Yes...I'm concerned about 150 pitches on a 35 degree night....and the kid quits baseball the next week......and hid younger brother quit baseball, and 1/3 or the HS refuses to pitch for the guy who thru him this much....the "end of the story".

Yes, I'm concerned about "relay men" 100 feet from the strong armed outfielder.

And, back to the beginning, I'm wondering if the PG scores are inflated, are they adjusted for age, are they adjusted for the level of the tryout....I spent a lot of time looking and could never find a "5". I just want to know what the "PG scouts" saw in straight up terms....not "sales terms".

How hard is that.

There have been many posts here about...."what did they mean" stuff.
I also... JUST GET WORN OUT...reading the hate mail.

I have seen some poor scores. My own child, never a 10, was rated fairly each and every time he attended. If his rating went up it was because he either hit better, threw faster or harder with better mechanics.

Gosh, I have seen two very low ratings..And they broke my heart.. they were given to great kids (who I cannot post)who really wanted "it" more than it was a physical reality.

Huge heart. Medium skill coupled with low projectability.

So when I see people being snyde about ratings I think of those two kids that I personally know..Who had their ratings removed or just took it.... I get sad.

Sad, because the person who wrote this thread needs to hate because he does not want to participate in probably the one thing that could either put his kid on the map or take him off of it.

If you dont risk rejection, you will never be accepted by the group you want most.

Rejection lasts one week. Regret lasts a whole lifetime.

I thank those that have PM'd me. I assure you this is not about my kid. It is about honesty and application of limited time for the athlete and application of limited funds for the parents. Its about an organization that suggests they provide an opinion of a potential baseball player who obviously loves the game and wishes to continue in the sport.

My question was....and continues to be....what;s the answer? While I think I know I've found it I think fellow baseball web folks should demand an honest appraisal of an athlete's potential to move to higher levels. I think PGs verbage is right on....but their scores seem over inflated.
This was the post that Harv started with...
quote:
Okay PG...Turkey time. I've never seen a "5"...and darn few "6's" or "7's".

I'm assuming PG is an inflated 4.0 scale and folks with 6's should look at another sport?

Just want to get the grading down to reality.

I take a lot of pride in honesty. In fact, I always thought we built Perfect Game based on honesty. I don't understand? But am willing to answer any question with 100% honesty.

This came in another post that was started by "Harv", in the Showcase forum. (Show Me A "5")

quote:
So.....I've been looking at the PG website...can't find someone below a "6". Guess its a "4.0" scale. Come on guys....lets be honest.

I replied...
Since we begin grading players here are the totals. Remember that some grades include the same player that we have graded more than once. This could be especially true for the 10s, seeing that many of the very best players have been graded several times.

Note: See below, when a player grades extremely low, we ask if they want their grade displayed. If they don’t we enter a zero in our database.

10 - 1511
9.5 – 1235
9 – 2209
8.5 – 2462
8 – 4301
7.5 – 4332
7 – 5428
6.5 – 3221
6 – 1873
5.5 – 936
5 – 526
4.5 – 102
4 – 126
3.5 – 63
3 – 23
2 – 1
0 – 898

Interesting that we gave 1,511 players a grade of 10, and we gave 2,675 players a grade below 6.

Does anyone think I just made this stuff up?

Also, I don't understand this post by "Harv"

I didn't send any PM, so it stands to reason you didn't get it.

When someone mentions "Turkey Time" are they just wondering about scores? When someone says "Come on guys....lets be honest" does that sound like they are just "wondering about scores?

I have mentioned several times that we grade people based on potential and tend to grade higher vs lower. That we are wrong at times and if we are wrong would rather miss on the high side rather than the low side.

I have never received a PM from Harv, just these posts and now I read through a PM that someone now understands that "harv" is honestly seeking an honest answer. Here I thought I gave an honest answer. Yet it was completely ignored and another similiar post was started rather than a reply to the original post.

I can only be honest... There is no other way for me when it involves baseball. Your reputation is everything!

To answer the question by "Harv" regarding the numbers!

Please look at the figures above of the very few graded 6 to 7.5. In fact, look at all the numbers.

I'm glad that PG replied to Harv's question. Whatever Harv's reasons, I believe it warranted a reply and PG gave a very good explanation. Anyone in the business of making somewhat subjective opinions needs to maintain a high credibility and be willing to defend the work they do

For whatever its worth, our son recently attended a PG event and was graded a 6.5. He was somewhat disappointed, which to me just means he feels he can do better. The following week he attended an evaluation camp at a successful mid-sized D1 program. his numbers were about the same, with an improvement in throwing velocity, but everything else, batting, fielding, running, game performance, was almost identical. How did they grade him? Good hitter, keep working hard, a lot of potential, can definitely "play college baseball somewhere".

What does that mean to me? They saw a good baseball player with potential, but not to the D1 level for their particular program. According to the PG rating description I think that's consistent with a 6.5 rating (Possible D1, definite D2, JUCO). I might add that it is the only PG event our son has attended.

My opinion? PG seems to give fairly realistic evaluations, so maybe there aren't many 5's either because only the more skilled players tend to attend
or players with lower ratings don't publicize their rating (I wouldn't).

Thanks for the statistics.

Harv, what the heck? On November 11, you started this thread entitled "Show me a 5". In less than one day, PGstaff replied with the statistics re-posted in this thread.

Then 10 days later you started this thread, asking the same question. You've only made one other post in that time period, a comment on the ASU situation on Nov 20. I can only conclude that you posted the question the first time, and didn't bother to check for answers. Surely you can see that is inconsiderate behavior--somebody had to spend a fair amount of time collecting the data to provide an answer.

3fingered....I was unaware of the stats until today. If I missed them in another thread ....my bad and I humbly apoligize to PG.

The world (and various baseball programs) are interested in relieving folks of their money. I only want honesty and forthcoming in youth oriented things. Things the "youth" understands...not poppycock.

With the now known PG stats, then clearly there is a bell curve...and I'm sorry I missed it on another thread.

I'm also sorry that a guy that ponied up some $600 plus travel did not recognize it....hope you catch my drift.

We need honesty in baseball and if not the HSbaseballweb....then where?

Have a great Thanksgiving.

Two things belie your explanation Harv. If all you wanted were the statistics then you could have sent PG a PM. Alternatively, you could have simply started a thread and asked for the statistics without the negative innuendo.

Instead you chose the public humiliation route with words designed to embarrass like "Turkey," "reality," and "honesty" which seem to imply nefarious motives. Your apologies ring hollow Roll Eyes

In Afghanistan, they refer to this as "circle talk". They say something, deny they said it, contradict it, which leads us back to the beginning.

Just FYI.. I took a look at the most recent PG Underclass profiles in Mesa and there were a couple of 5.5s. Not that they are bad but I personally saw one of the players and he actually pitched fairly well and would just need to improve his strength and conditioning and I think he will improve his grade. I took my son to his first 2 PG events this year (Underclass Championships and Showcase) with our primary motive of seeing where he stands up against the competition. OF course , when you are going to spend the money, our roles as parents/coaches would be to at least give our sons/players the chance to prepare for this events so they can be at their best while performing/showcasing their skills. So far , it looks like he is in the middle of the bell curve and there is still a lot of things to improve on. Heck, even a 9 or 10 needs to maintain their game. Just my opinion.
