Your "high end" private academic schools are: Wofford and Furman...both VERY expensive mid-level D1's.

Of course, you have the two BIG state schools: Clemson and South Carolina.

Then a miriad of quality mid-level D1's: Coastal Carolina (being in Myrtle Beach is a two-edged sword), College of Charleston (beautiful campus in historic downtown Chas.), The Citadel (not for everybody), Winthrop, USC Upstate,Charleston Southern...I'm sure I'm leaving someone out.

Then a whole host of D2's and D3's, as well as JUCO's like Spartanburg Methodist that serve as feeder schools into the larger programs.

OK, that's it...

Texanfour..we are SC natives who now live in the DFW area. Our son signed with Winthrop (Rock Hill, SC, about 20 min south of Charlotte) and will be heading there in a couple of weeks to start his Freshman year. After going through the recruiting process and seeing a ton of college facilites across the country, Winthrop has some of the nicest facilties around, not to mention the campus is lovely. The coaching staff is pretty new (HC is Tom Riginos, starting his 2nd year after about 10 years as an assistant at Clemson, and a couple of new assistants who I haven't met yet), but we have high hopes that they will get Winthrop back on top of the Big South soon (very good Mid Major DI conference). I'm a USC alum, and of course if your son has the gear to sign with the back to back National Champion Gamecocks, best of luck to him!
All depends on what he's looking for.
