Southeastern District Games: April 14-19 (Spring Break Week)

Nansemond River is playing Summerville HS on Monday at Hanahan.  Summerville is currently ranked no. 2 in the state for South Carolina's largest classification. (AAAA)

Nansemond River defeats Summerville (SC) 7-1.  Robert Fitzwater gets the win throwing 6 strong innings, allowing 5 hits, with 5 strikeouts.  Rivers, J. Johnson, and Shane Woods each with multiple hits.  Woods hit his first HR of the season.  Nice win over a very quality team.

Hickory defeated Pinewood Prep, 16-3. Hickory will play the winner of Beaufort, SC and Cane Bay, SC on Tuesday at 7:30 pm.

Grassfield 8-0 over Unicoi (TN). Stallings the W. 1 hitter.

Riddick was 2 for 3 for Grassfield and great defensive plays by the shortstop For Grassfield Kevin Lambert!

Nansemond River will face Chantilly (VA), while Grassfield will be matched up with Wando (SC).

 

Clean sweep for the locals on Monday.  Great Bridge will face a state ranked Berkeley (SC) team on their home field, on Tuesday. 

Good job by local teams down in SC, especially the NR big win over a very strong program in Summerville !  Grassfield will have it's hands full with another strong program in Wando... Good luck to all our local guys over the break !!!

 

Grassfield 8 Wando 4. Brett Smith struck out 8 in 6 and got the W. Smith also went 2-4 with a double and rbi. Bullock 2-4 with 3 RBIs. Well played game by both teams.

GB and Hickory games have been bumped to Wednesday.  NR will now be playing Beaufort (SC) at Cane Bay HS at 10:00am.  Hickory will follow against Cane Bay.

 

The remainder of the schedule is on a wait and see.  Yesterday's weather has caused a bit of a shuffle!  There is likely to be multiple games played today.

Anyone know how wb did in their first game in Florida?

According to the web site of the host team, the game was canceled.  It was raining in that area yesterday so it seems probable that such was the reason.

Great couple of wins for the Grassfield team, congrats !! Perhaps this latest situation will prove to be a valuable learning experience for ALL ... 

Or maybe a road trip and everyone relaxes and just plays ball.  Either way a nice story for GF.  Easy to see why UVA has a top 10 program year in and year out anymore though.  Keep anything close to half of the top 10-15 prospects in state each year and you have a ball club.

WB beats NOVA, FL 3-0.  Rutherford complete game.

Grassfield 6-5 in 8 over Ashley Ridge. Burcham 3-3 with 4 RBIs. Bullock 2-4. Brian Johnson go ahead double in top 8.

The 11 year old brother of one of the OHS players will be scoring the game on GameChanger this morning. There are two Oakton Varsity baseball teams on GC: it's one of the two.

 

Bear in mind that the scorer is ELEVEN, so if you think the hit should've been an error or vice versa, just relax and enjoy the fact that us VA-bound folks are getting the game in real time.

WB beats Pompano Beach, FL 7-0 in 5 complete innings due to weather.   Klak threw complete game.

WB beats MS Douglas, FL 4-3.

WB looks to be heading for the top 20 soon.  Impressive trip by the Bruins.  Giving up 3 runs in 3 games in FL...maybe that pitching is better than people thought.

 

NR has been solid from day 1 and had a big win in SC against defending State Champ.

 

GB has lost 2, 9 inning games by 1 run each to very good teams.  Have to wonder if Taylor Lane might have been worth 1 run in either or both of those.  They will be tough the rest of the way.

 

Hickory and GF look to be settling in for strong 2nd halves. 

 

Time to bring on the rest of the old Eastern region.

As I have all season, I still contend that the five programs mentioned above will be 16-20 game winners by the time Regionals roll around.  None of the five will play another team this regular season, that is better than them (unless they happen to have one more game against one another).  It doesn't mean that they will all run the table against all-comers.  However, if they all play to their ability, don't be shocked if they do.

 

 

Anyone know a list of the schedules for the SED teams now that conference play is starting up this week?

NR has a makeup date at Indian River on Wednesday, then travel to Dinwiddie on Friday.  Not sure what else is giong on.  I have heard that some programs weren't able to schedule games for this week.

I know WB play Woodside this week.  I think Woodside still hasn't lost a game and it will be a pretty good indicator of what WB may be facing the rest of the way.  I think they have one left with OS and GF each but the rest are from other districts.

 

At some point I think Hickory and GB get Kellem so that should be interesting too.

GF at KF Tuesday and GF at Bethel Thursday

Grassfield is better than Woodside.  I don't think Hickory and GB will meet up with Kellam until playoff time.  Kellam is in a different conference.  Now, if Hickory or GB have Kellam on their schedule, then that is a different matter.  And they very well may.

Separately, I saw that GF plays KF this week.  Heads up!!!!  Whether its the top not playing well, or Kings Fork being better than expected...I don't know.  What I know is that KF has played the top very tough in the first half of the season.

You need to be ready to play at your best all the time. Heard KF is tough. They did well vs WB.

 

I also know that since coach Todd left the team is winning. I think 5-1.

Pretty good.

Their schedule has been MUCH easier so let's not read too much into his departure and their improved record.  The players liked Coach Todd (as well as the rest of the staff).  The issues came from the kids who didn't play regularly.

OK so I wonder if the player that was hit in the FACE played or not. That is not even the point. But hear he is a JV Player that did in fact see playing time.

 

If this happen to a starting SR. The same outcome for sure.

 

Do you have a kid on this team? You know that the players not playing called for Todd to be removed?

I think Redbird's point was pretty simple.  That is, playing four of the top teams in the state in WB, GB, Hickory, and NR, are likely to put a few check marks in the 'ol Loss column.

 

Playing teams not named WB, GB, Hickory, and NR, are more likely to get you a few more Dubyas!  Especially when one considers that Grassfield has a really nice group.  Hence, they have won more games lately.

My reason for mentioning where the issues came from was simply to contradict your implication that GF is now playing better because Coach Todd is gone.  I am not condoning what happened nordo I believe that a kid who doesn't play deserves to be hit.  (Not sure why you capitalized 'FACE')  I am simply re-stating what players, parents and coaches have told me.  The regulars in the lineup would walk through a brick wall for Coach Todd.

You may know the team well. I have heard different things. Not sure they would walk through a wall for him. Just what some parents have told me. These parent have been on the team a while. I do not have a kid on the team just friends there.
