In my opinion both are surprising but Grassfield at 10-2 is a bigger surprise. I said it before the season began and I'll say it again.  You don't replace 7 of 8 position players, 6 of whom are playing college ball (the 7th could have if he wanted to), with guys who have limited varsity experience without a drop off in all phases of the game.  NR is experiencing that drop off this year.  I'm not sure they've had a game where hitting, fielding, and pitching have all been in sync together.

Comments about NR and the comparasion to last year are interesting.  Last year GB lost 5/6 very closely contested games and nearly got out of the regional last year with a very tough loss to Kellam the eventual State runner up.  This was after losing an all State infield combo and a DIV I pitcher among other key parts from the State Champ 2011 team.  They might done considerably better had Walker and Balser been there as they could have been.

It goes to show how stacked GB has been in the last 5 or 6 years in particular that they have been right there every year and simply reload.  They currently have 2 legit professional prospects on the roster in Jones and Cody.  Although I haven't seen this brought this up I think Cody may end up being the bigger prospect of the two.

GB 11   Deep Creek 0 in five innings.

GB  11R, 4H, 0E

DC 0R, 1H, 2E

Game was over in the third inning when GB put up 9 runs to go up 10-0.  GB only had 4 hits but received 11 walks and a couple of errors from DC to score their 11 runs.

GB

C. Jones 3 IP, 0H, 4K, 0R

E. Nittinger 1 IP, 1H, 2K, 0R

G.Barcliff 1 IP, 0H, 1K, 0R

DC

Used four pitchers

Yes, they sure did. I'm not tied to anyone. It was a direct statement. There has been a lot of sloppy baseball played throughout the season. I agree, I understand mistakes happen, but certain programs have these mishaps every time they take the field. These teams also have talented kids on there rosters, so take it how you want. It will all play itself out in a couple weeks once the tourney starts.

Looking at the schedule I'm not too sure.  Oscar Smith has 7 losses and are in a very difficult part of their schedule with Grassfield, Great Bridge, Nansemond River and Indian River remaining.

Indian River has 9 losses with Lakeland, Nansemond River, Deep Creek twice, Kings Fork, Western Branch and Oscar Smith. Assuming wins over the bottom three teams, they could play their way in by beating NR and OS.

It's not entirely impossible that these 2 (or even 3 teams given NR's inconsistency) come to the last game with a playoff bid on the line.

Very true. From the 2nd seed you potentially only have to win 1 to get to Regionals (assuming GB wins to get to district tourney final). It's also important to be the 3 or 6 seed as well. You avoid GB and potentially only need to win 2 to get to Regionals. The 4/5 seeds have a rough road ahead of them. They must win 3 including beating GB along the way.

NR can lock up a spot Saturday and probably knock IR out of any big late run at the 6th spot.

GF and WB played Monday. GF won 3-2 in 11. WB will be without McPherson he rest of the season. He is having surgery Monday.
