Grassfield 6, Lakeland 0

Deep Creek 8, King's Fork 3. Kam Stewart threw 6 innings for Deep Creek.

Western Branch 2, Nansemond River 1.
Knotted 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Michael Donovan singled and CJ McAndrews drove Donovan home with a double to left field to secure the win.

Nansemond River scored first, in the top of the fourth, when Zach Vann hit a line drive solo homerun to right field on an 0-0 pitch. Nansemond River threatened to score again in the top of the fifth. Travis Johnson led off the inning with a single, followed by Hayden Champigny‘s double. With runners at second and third and no outs, Nick Thompson, pitching for Western Branch, induced the third batter of the inning to ground out to third and the next two batters to strike out. Although Western Branch had runners at first and second in the bottom of the first, the Bruin’s first real threat was in the bottom of the fifth. Alex Hunt led off with a double but Josh Howard, Nansemond River's pitcher, threw him out attempting to advance to third on Michael Donovan’s bunt. Howard held Western Branch scoreless until the bottom of the 6th when Thompson led off with a single, Kenny Cassidy bunted Thompson to second, and Shane Johnsonbaugh singled Thompson home.

Hitting for WB:
Garrett Brooks 1-2, BB
Cassidy 1-1, BB, sac
Donovan 1-3, run
Hunt 1-3 (DB)
Johnsonbaugh 1-3, rbi
McAndrews 1-3 (DB), rbi
Thompson 2-3, run

Hitting for NR:

I'll let WB fill in the details, but turning point in the game was in the top of the 5th inning. NR's Travis Johnson and Hayden Champigny led of with a single and double giving NR runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs. Nick Thompson then retired the next three batters in a row, striking out the last two. Thompson went on to retire the final six NR batters.
Great Bridge 6, Grassfield 5. (Arrived in the 5th and writing this from memory so if I misstate a fact, please correct.) Grassfield scored early in the game to take a 5-0 lead in the top of the second. Later, the score was 5-2. In the bottom of the 6th, GB scored 1 to make it 5-3 and then, with 2 outs, Brian Beard hit a 3-run homerun to put Great Bridge in the lead. Ryan Bermeister led off the top of the 7th with a line drive to right field. Great Bridge switched out pitchers, putting Andrew Flaherty on the mound. Nykolai Ellis, the next batter was hit by a pitch. Jordan Miller then hit a line drive to load the bases with no outs. The next batter hit into a fielder's choice with a force out being made at home plate. The next batter hit a fly ball to right field but it must not have been deep enough for the runner at third to tag. The final batter of the game grounded out to second.

Western Branch 16, Deep Creek 5.

Ryan Bennett picked up his 4th win of the season. Eight of the Bruins starters scored in the game. Alex Hunt, Shane Johnsonbaugh and Kenny Cassidy led the charge with two hits each, with Cassidy going 2-2 (2DB) and driving in 5 runs. Deep Creek first got on the board in the third, scoring 4 runs, when they strung together 5 hits by Mutter, Stewart, Morse, Bruce and Winslow. Kam Stewart led Deep Creek's hitting going 2-3 with a solo homerun in the 4th.
The GF/GB game was very edgey and a little on the sloppy side. GF scored 5 in the 2nd on 4 straight hits (1b, 2b, 1b, 2b) with 1 out followed by 3 errors by GB which allowed a 2 or 3 run inning to turn into 5.

GB got 2 back in the 4th sparked by Charlie Cody's double.

GF opened the door in the 6th with 2 errors and a walk putting runners on that were cashed by the Beard Homerun.

Game also involved a chippy spiking play at first base that lead some pretty ugly chirping between the two teams. That in turn led to an intentionally hit batter. It was a page of old fashioned salty hardball from the 50's-60's.

IMO unless Hickory or NR can beat GB next week the SED race is probably over.

Bottom of 6. Auston gets on by error by the 2nd baseman, Matt Outman replaces Jason. #8 Cody gets on by error by 2nd baseman. Lee gets on by fielders choice (6-4)Auston scores. Hunter flys out to right. #8 cody walks, Walker to pitch for Outman. Beard crushes a fastball up for a 3 run HR. #7 PH for Dudley, singles. Then advances on a balk. Preston walks. Aston strikes out. Cooper allows only 1 GF hit until he is replaced by Andrew in the 7th.
Top 7 bermister leads off with a single. Andrew in for Cooper. Ellis HBP, miller singles. Lowery hit’s a ground ball to SS who throws out bermister at home. Jason Flyouts out to the right fielder and walker grounds out 4-3.

Luv, I wasn’t around playing old fashion ball in the 50’s -60’s. Beard spiked the GF first basemen in the bottom of the 5th when he grounded out. How did that lead to an intentionally hit batter in the 7th with a runner on first and no outs? Why do you put the tying run in scoring position with no outs? Is there some inside info? GF’s SS was also spiked on a easy force at 2nd.

GB
Lee…….1 for 4
Hunter…1 for 4
Beard…..1 for 4..(HR)
#7.……..1 for 1
Preston ..2 for 3..BB
Auston…1 for 3
#8 cody…2 for 3..(ground rule 2b in the 2nd)

GF
Read……1 for 4
Berm……1 for 4
Ellis…….1 for 2..2 HBP
Miller…..1 for 3..BB
Lowery…1 for 4
Walker….1 for 4..2B
Tyler……1 for 3..2B

Side note, I notice the Virginia pilot had GB with 13 hits and GF with 2 Errors. I counted 9 hits with GF’s 3 errors (2 by 2b and one by the 1B “off the bag” call). GB had 2 FC’s, even if they thought the one of the errors was a hit and GB counted the FC’s as hits, I still don’t account for 13. Anyone?

GF - You are correct the HBP made no sense from a baseball perspective and was an emotions thing becasue of the intensity the game had taken on at the end.

The chatter on the field from both teams especially around the plate was pretty ugly from the 5th until the end. It was the kind of stuff you might have expected from guys like Rose and Gibson if you are old enough to remember them ...like me.

I also agree that there were not 13 hits by GB but they have gotten more done off GF then anyone else.

As was the case last year a very good SED team or two will not be going to regionals. Depending on how the SED tournament is structured and assuming GB holds on there could very well be a Thompson/Ingraham match up in the semi's with a Regional spot on the line. Lot's of ball to be played before that and NR and a improving Hickory team will have something to say.
Nansemond River 13, Oscar Smith 0

Zach Rice (3-0) and Tyler Brown combined to pitch a 4 hit shutout with 11 strikeouts. Ryan O'Hara, Brandon Lowe, and Travis Johnson had two hits apiece and Johnson hit his 3rd homerun of the season. Josh Howard, Kyle Moore, Johnson and O'Hara had 2 RBI each. Troy Applin, Caleb Farrell, Tim Brock, and Remington Johnston had 1 hit each for Oscar Smith.
Luv, sry only vaguely heard of the rivalry, but after some research I see what you mean.

Gato, GB had 2 ER (4 unearned) GF 3 or 4 ER ( 1 or 2 unearned) I can't exactly remember the play where it was a first and third situation, runner at first was in a “pickle”, runner at 3rd broke home, and the play at home -- GB catcher dropped the ball, it looked like the umpire was going to call him out. But I would say GF had 2 unearned.
