Oscar Smith scored 7 runs in the 7th inning and took advantage of a complete Great Bridge collapse to get a great win for their school. Defense and pitching were the downfall for GB.

I'll let ofs10 provide the details, but congrats to them for a big win.

Congrats to the Oscar Smith boys!!! Would have loved to see that celebration.

Out of the first 10 batters to come up in the 7th inning, 6 got hits, 3 walked and 1 had a sac bunt!
OS (9) vs. GB (6)

What an unbelievable victory for OS against GB!

This is indeed a momentous occasion for OS baseball … because of its rarity! I don’t believe, and with my “Half-zheimer’s” (not “ALL-zheimer’s") I can’t recall or remember the last occurrence of a victory over GB. I do know that it hasn’t happened in a very long time! When my son (currently OS Varsity Head Coach) played baseball for GB in the mid-90’s, they certainly never lost to OS; so, I believe its been at least 20 years or more!

After all the adversity since Spring Break (where OS went 2-0 at the Beach Blast), it has been very disappointing losing close games (by 1 or 2 runs) ... especially after leading in most of them. SO, to finally win one … after leading … with a comeback in the 7th inning … against the defending Virginia State Champs … is such a treasure and beyond my comprehension!

Congratulations TIGERS … this is a lasting memory and enjoyable moment … especially for an OLD alumni like myself!

OSCAR SMITH SCOREKEEPER DETAILED COMMENTARY:
(This was THE game of the 21st Century for Oscar Smith … a landmark victory on Friday, 5/4/12!)

OS: 2 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 7 // 9 - 11 - 1
GB: 0 - 1 - 0 - 1 - 2 - 2 - 0 // 6 - 7 - 3
WP: Tadd Ennis (1-0) LP: Cooper Jones

Logan Lex starts the game on the mound for Oscar Smith ... Brian Beard for Great Bridge.

Top of the 1st: OS lead-off batter, Jae Damewood, grounds to 2B where the ball was misplayed; next, a sac bunt by David Loudon; followed by a K by Stephen Lorkiewicz; then, Conner Smith doubled down the right field line to score Damewood; Remy Johnston hits a groundball to SS where the ball was misplayed (putting runners on 1st & 3rd); Jarrett McNeil then doubled to score the 2nd run of the inning... both unearned.

Key play to end the bottom of the 1st occurred when Austin Owens hit a double to the LF fence with Brian Beard on 1B. Beard came around 3rd, attempting to score, but a nice OS relay from LF Damewood to SS Lorkiewicz to C Tyler Ennis, who then made a diving tag at the plate for the 3rd out.

Great Bridge got a leadoff double from Taylor Lane to start the bottom of the 2nd. After a fly to RF moved him to 3rd, Stephen Dudley hit a rocket lineout to left for a sac fly, scoring GB’s first run.

In the GB 4th, with 1 out, Lane walked; then, stole 2nd & 3rd and scored on a double by Dudley for GB’s 2nd run … tying the game at 2-2.

In the GB 5th, C. Higgerson singled & was sac bunted to 2B. Charlie Cody was hit by a pitch; then, both runners moved up to 2B & 3B on a passed ball. With the infield in, a ball is hit directly to OS’s 2B. The runner at 3rd was going to hold, but the ball was misplayed for an error, allowing the go-ahead run to score. After a walk, Lane hit a sac fly (would have been the 3rd out) to put GB up 4-2 … both were unearned runs.

In the GB 6th, Dudley starts the inning with a 4-pitch walk; this was followed by a rocket hit by Conner Jones that goes right through the OS SS into left center, scoring Dudley & putting Jones at 2B;. Higgerson then pops out to 1B, followed by a Dane Smith single to center, but Jones holds at 3B. OS brings in Sophomore Tadd Ennis (first district varsity game... been a JV pitcher all season). He walks Charlie Cody; then, Brian Beard sac fly's Jones in. After a BB to Owens to load the bases, Lane hits a shot back up the middle that Ennis snags and makes the out at 1B to end the inning.... score is now 6-2 GB going into the 7th.

Now here’s OS’s “wild & crazy” 7th: Conner Smith leads off the inning with a sharp single to RF, followed by one of the “at-bats of the night” by Remy Johnston. After working a 1-2 count full, he fouls off 3 pitches before drawing a walk. Jarrett McNeil then delivers a single to right-center, scoring Conner Smith. The play got interesting … with Great Bridge yelling "cut 2" on the play, Johnston rounds 3rd looking to score. The CF throws the ball over everyone all the way to home. Johnston would have been out, but the OS coach put the brakes on, and Johnston scrambles back to 3rd while the ball gets past Dudley (no damage done other than the runner getting back to 3B safe because McNeil had already headed to 2B on the throw home) ... but OS runners are now on 2nd & 3rd. Tyler Ennis follows with an RBI base hit to right-center, but the throw goes to 3B, allowing him to move to 2B. Chris Scianna follows by working a full-count, fouling off a pitch, and then walking to load the bases. Ball 4 was in the dirt, and kicked off to the side of the home area. McNeil scampers in from 3B where he and the catcher dive to the plate, with McNeil beating the play to score the 3rd run of the inning & Tyler Ennis advances to 3rd. While the catcher & pitcher converse at home plate, Scianna takes off for 2B and makes it standing up. At this point, Cooper Jones (who had started the inning) is replaced by Logan Harrelson. OS Relief Pitcher Tadd Ennis then drops an RBI base-hit to RF scoring the tying run (OS runners now at 1st & 3rd). GB plays the infield in and no hold at 1B now. Harrelson then spins to 1B, but never throws the ball, balking in the go-ahead run & putting Tadd Ennis at 2B. Then, another great at-bat where Jae Damewood works a 1-2 count full, fouls off two pitches, then walks. David Loudon then lays down a Sac Bunt, moving the runners to 2nd & 3rd for the 1st OS out of the inning. Stephen Lorkiewicz then hits a line-drive base-hit to CF, scoring one ... then, Damewood tries to score... stops halfway and starts back to 3rd while Lorkiewicz attempts to get to second. Instead of the rundown at third, the catcher throws to 2B. On the throw, Damewood races for home. The SS catches the ball at 2B and fires back to home plate too late and Damewood scores OS’s 9th run of the game while Lorkiewicz takes 3rd. Conner Smith then hits a hard ground ball down the 3B line that Charlie Cody backhands and gets Lorkiewicz in a rundown at home for OS’s 2nd out. After back-to-back full count walks load the bases, B. Christelli relieves Harrelson and strikes out Tyler Ennis for OS’s 3rd out.

In the bottom of the 7th, OS's Tadd Ennis got Kyle Matthews to ground back to the mound for out 1; then, struck out Dudley looking; Conner Jones works his count full, then hits one off of the LF fence... 3 feet foul (what was weird was that all of the lights down the LF line had gone out, it was very dark, and OS’s LF couldn't make the catch although he was there leaping at the fence). After another long foul ball, Jones flies out to RF to end the game.

Now, granted, GB did some weird stuff mentally throwing the ball around in the 7th; but, regardless of where they threw it, keep in mind that Oscar Smith's first 9 batters to step to the plate went: single, 9-pitch walk, single, single, 7-pitch walk, single, 8-pitch walk, sac bunt, and single to start the inning (5-for-5 with 3 great 7-plus pitch walks and a sac bunt). To put the win on GB's pitchers and defense melting down is a little bit unfair to that group ... I know I’m biased but I think the OS batters all had fantastic at-bats in that last inning more so than GB pitchers & defense falling apart... hate to take anything away from them.

2 of Smith's 9 runs were unearned... 2 of Great Bridge's 6 runs were unearned.

I'm very appreciative and give thanks to "va" for helping me with my "half-zheimers" by defining the time span as EXACTLY 13 YEARS since Oscar Smith's last victory over Great Bridge ... still quite awhile and, in fact, in the 20th Century (1999)!!!

Western Branch 1R 4H 0E 8LOB
Nansemond River 5R 9H 0E 5LOB

A large crowd gathered at NRHS for a game to determine sole possession of 1st place with a week to go in the regular season. Western Branch came out hitting in the top of the 1st when Shane Johnsonbaugh and Alex Hunt hit back to back singles with two outs to give WB runners at 1st and 3rd. Nansemond River starter Zach Rice was able to escape without giving up a run after a fly ball out by Bobby Barefoot. WB starter Ryan Bennett retired the Warriors in order in the bottom of the 1st. Western Branch went quietly in the 2nd inning. In the bottom of the 2nd with 1 out, Kyle Moore took a 1-2 pitch over the left field fence to stake a 1-0 lead for NR. In the top of the 3rd, Garrett Brooks had an excellent at-bat working a 1-2 count full then fouling off 4 pitches before drawing a walk. Kyle McPherson then sacrificed Brooks to second. Johnsonbaugh was then hit by a pitch. Alex Hunt hit a FC to 2B but was able to beat the throw to first for a double play. Brooks never broke stride rounding third for the plate and slid in under the tag scoring from 2B. In the bottom of the inning Blake Eure roped a double down the left field line. Trevor Riggs then hit a push bunt past the pitcher for a base hit. Riggs then stole 2nd and the runners were advanced on a sac fly to center by Tyler Brown. Travis Johnson then hit a double right over the bag at 3rd scoring Riggs and Johnson scored on a Zach Vann single between 1st and 2nd. The Bruins threatened in the 4th after Zach Rutherford opened with a single. Rutherford was moved to 2nd on a grant Miaorana sac bunt. Patrick Avery then drew a walk after another 10 pitch battle with Rice. Rutherford and pinch runner Jonathan Poteet were moved up to 2nd and 3rd on a sac bunt by Matthew Roth. The inning ended on a ground ball out to 2nd base. NR added their 5th run in the bottom half on a Willie Gillus single,, Ryan O'Hara sac bunt, Riggs single, and TY Brown single to score Gillus. It appeared NR might break it open until a sharply hit ball by Travis Johnson was fielded by Roth who stepped on 3rd and threw to 1st for the double play. WBs last threat of the game came in the 5th after a McPherson single and hit batter with no outs. However, Rice again got out of trouble with a line out to right, fielder's choice out at 2B and a fly out to center. Rice finished the 6th and Tyler Brown pitched the 7th.

Thank you, Oscar Smith, for obliging. My next two wishes from the baseball geni are for WB to beat Hickory and Great Bridge to knock off Nansemond River. The first will be a dog fight. Not so sure that GB will be able to handle NR given that Connor Jones pitched tonight against Grassfield.
