Western Branch 2, Grassfield 0

It was a game of few hits, Western Branch with 3 and Grassfield with 2. Garrett Brooks opened the game with a hit but was left stranded at third base to end the top half of the first inning. Brandon Doggett put Western Branch on the board in the top of the 2nd when his right side single drove home Kenny Cassidy who had reached on a walk, advanced to second on a balk and advanced to third on Michael Donovan’s sac bunt. Western Branch scored its second run in the top of the 5th when Shane Johnsonbaugh’s ground out drove in Garrett Brooks who had led off the inning with an infield single then stolen both second and third bases. Nykolai Ellis had Grassfield’s first hit of the game in the bottom of the 7th, breaking up the no-hitter with a clean single to right field. The threat was short-lived, though, as Kenny Cassidy threw out Ellis when he attempted to steal second. In a 9-pitch AB, Max Burcham, a freshman, next hit a long fly ball which Brooks caught almost at the fence. Danny McLaughlin followed with Grassfield’s second hit of the game, a blooper, but was left stranded when the next batter struck out to end the game.

Nick Thompson pitched the complete game for Western Branch, allowing 2 hits, walking 3 and striking out 11. Matt Outman pitched the first five innings for Grassfield, allowing 3 hits, 2ER, walking 5 and striking out 6. Kyle Walker, a junior, pitched the final two innings, allowing no hits, no runs, walking 1 and striking out 2.

O Smith---0--3--1--0--0--0--0---4--3--5
K Fork----0--1--1--0--4--0--X---6--5--2

WP: T. Cherry - LP: T. Applin (1-3)

For O. Smith - After getting 3 runs on 3 hits in the 2nd inning, Smith went hitless for the remainder of the game, while allowing 5 unearned runs to blow a 4-1 lead. Troy Applin ('11) is the tough-luck loser on the mound, striking out 6 in 4.1 IP and giving up the lone earned run. The big blow for Smith came on Stephen Lorkiewicz's ('12) 2-run triple in the 2nd inning. As he slid into third, his shoulder may have come out of place and back in, taking away the team's 2B and a big part of the offense. The replacements in the field made 3 of the team's 5 errors.

Applin - 4.1 IP, 1 ER, 6 K's (L) / RBI Double
Lorkiewicz - 1-1, triple, 2 RBI, HBP, 2 SBs

For KF - Travis Cherry ('11) pitched a complete-game (125 pitches) 3-hitter, allowing 3 earned runs, walking 7, and striking out 8. Cherry, N. Johnson, D. Gromkoski, G. Riddick & M. Hommell got hits for King's Fork, with Hommell scoring 2 runs.

T. Cherry - 7 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 7 BB, 8 K (W) / 1-4
N. Johnson - 1-4, run
D. Gromkoski - 1-4, run, RBI
M. Hommell - 1-2, 2 runs, BB

Grassfield 4 Nansemond River 0

#21 for Grassfield (Inghram ?) threw 6 innings giving up 3 hits while striking out 10. Nansemond River threatened in the first inning after loading the bases with 2 outs but #21 shut the door with his 3rd strike out of the inning. Tyler Brown threw 6 innings for NR giving up 4 runs on 5 hits and striking out 8 but also had 5 BBs.

Grassfield loaded the bases with 1 out after 2 walks sandwiched their first hit of the game. They scored their first run on a slow roller to SS scored the runner from 3B. That was followed by a sharp single by #1 LF scoring the second run of the inning.

In the 6th Grassfield added 2 insurance runs on a hit by #23 1B with the bases loaded. Story of this game was the Grassfield pitcher.
Western Branch 10, Oscar Smith 0

For the second night in a row, a Western Branch pitcher pitched a 2-hitter. Ryan Bennett did not allow a hit until the top half of the 5th inning. In fact, the Oscar Smith starting pitcher, Loudon, did not allow a hit until the bottom of the 5th. Bennett faced 18 batters in the game’s 6 innings. The first Oscar Smith hit was a single by Michael Foreman in the top of the 5th. He was eliminated as a threat when the next batter hit into a 6-6-3 double play. In the top of the 6th, Johnston hit a single up the middle but was thrown out in a 8-4 play when he tried to stretch the single to a double. Western Branch scored first in the bottom of the 5th when WB strung three singles together, Brandon Doggett and CJ McAndrews’ reaching on infield singles and Garrett Brooks reaching on a single. In the bottom of the 6th, Oscar Smith’s pitching ran out of steam. Four pitchers combined to issue 9 free passes, sandwiched around Doggett’s second single of the game and Kenny Cassidy’s double, to end the game on a run rule.

Your right Dawg, the story of the game was Jason Inghram. But, did you know that Jason almost didn’t play this game? He wasn’t feeling very well and advised the coaches, but he battled through it. I guess that could explain his slow start with 1BB, HBP and infield hit in the first. Jason is doing very well this season with an era of 0.8, along with GF’s other pitchers Matt Outman (era 1.6), Kolby White (era 0.0) and Kyle Walker (closer, era 0.0). They too have been equally impressive – to this point.

However, I also wanted to add the subplots. We always seem to focus on the pitchers, who in this case are doing very well, but what about the defense behind him? A spectacular diving catch by the CF (Ryan Bermiester) charging in toward second laying out horizontally to catch a fly ball or slowing down the running game are examples that have contributed to the success of the pitcher. There are other teams with very good pitching but the defense may make an untimely error that combined with a BB here and there and a hit thrown in that contributes to runs being scored (4th inning 2 unearned) that sometimes will be the difference. Not to say that GF doesn’t make errors, we have given up 4 but so far that hasn’t hurt us.

Additionally, it's been documented here that GF needs to hit. While that’s true, we have faced some pretty good pitching. Is it lack of hitting or just good pitching? Take the top 4 (excluding GF) in the standings. GB Connor, WB Thompson, HH Blake/Lighton, NR T. Brown, all arguably very good pitchers. GF accumulated 15 hits and scored 7 runs, while in contrast GF’s pitchers (Inghram, Outman, Walker) has allowed 15 hits and 5 runs.

Just some thoughts and numbers to throw out there for discussion, that being said things have changed in the second half of the season in the past. Hopefully GF can continue to do well defensively as well as our pitchers continue to do what they do best, and offensively explode with some consistent and timely hitting as the season moves towards the playoffs.
I didn't intend to slight the young man in CF who did come a long way to make a nice diving catch. I usually give the 50,000 foot highlight version of a game by mentioning players with multiple hits or RBIs, outstanding pitching performances, or key momentum swinging innings (from my viewpoint of course).

However, after looking deeper into Inghram's performance here are a few more details: In the 6 innings he pitched (18 outs) he struckout 10. Of the 5 balls that left the infield 3 were caught (including a diving catch by the CF). The remaining 5 outs were ground balls and a pop up to 1B. Of the 3 hits he gave up 1, the infield single, should have been an out but the SS stayed back on the ball allowing the batter to beat out the throw. Throw into the mix that he wasn't feeling well solidifies him as the story of the game.
Deep Creek 8 Nansemond River 6

Deep Creek 8 R 8 H 3 E 8 LOB
Nansemond 6 R 7 H 4 E 5 LOB

Nansemond River started the game with 2 runs in the first inning after a walk and a 1 out triple by Brandon Lowe who was then knocked in by Kyle Moore. In the 2nd, NR added two more runs on an error and a single. In the top half of the fourth, NR added two more runs on back to back singles by Willie Gillus and Zach Rice followed by a Tyler Brown double and a Deep Creek throwing error.

In the bottom half of the fourth inning, starting NR pitcher Zach Rice was relieved after 3.1 innings giving up 3 hits 0 runs while striking out 5 and walking 3. With 2 men on Kyle Moore got a flyball out and picked off a runner on 2nd base to end the inning. NR 6 DC 0 thru 4.

Then it got crazy....the bottom of the 5th started with 3 straight walks. With bases loaded and no outs Moore was relieved. The next batter hit a slow roller to 3B which was booted (literally) into the DC dugout scoring 2 runs. That was followed by a single, double, error, single, single, enter another reliever after 7 runs and no outs, then a run scoring fielders choice and a single before the inning finally ended with the score DC 8 NR 6.

Deep Creek pitcher then took care of business in the 6th and 7th not allowing a hit the rest of the way...Sorry I don't have names for DC players, but #27 and #13 led DC with two hits each and the starting pitcher #2 went the distance giving up 7 hits and getting 4 K's.

I noticed that Great Bridge, Hickory, Indian River, Kings Fork, Deep Creek and Oscar Smith show only six games played. Are there that many games (3) to be made up?

Actually there are 4 games not included above because the Nansemond River / Deep Creek game played last night (and included in the standings) was in place of today's game. Starting with next week's post, I will post, each week, the unplayed schedule for the rest of the season with the makeups included and then will move the unplayed games forward from week to week.

Here are the 4 not included above:

(1) Just obtained the Indian River / King's Fork game result which was played last night instead of Tuesday. Indian River 19 / King's Fork 7.

(2) Oscar Smith / Deep Creek is rescheduled to April 13. It has been rescheduled from March 24, 28, 30 and 31.

(3) Deep Creek / Great Bridge is rescheduled from April 1 to April 25.

(4) Hickory / Nansemond River rescheduled from April 1 to April 11.
Western Branch 14, Indian River 3

Ugly game. A number of walks and errors. WB issued 2 walks, allowed two other batters to reach on errors and gave up 0 earned runs. Indian River issued 7 walks, allowed 6 other batters to reach on errors and gave up 5 earned runs (out of the 14!). Shane Johnsonbaugh pitched 4 innings to pick up the win in a run-rule shortened game. For WB, Garrett Brooks, Alex Hunt, Michael Donovan, and Brandon Doggett each hit a single, CJ McAndrews hit a (laser) double and Nick Thompson hit a double and home run. For Indian River, Roger Hall, AJ Hunt and Shockley each hit a single and Nik Malvo batted a thousand with a single, a double and a walk.
