Curious as to which of the three games this week is considered the VHSL benefit game to avoid going over the 20 game regular season limit.
OSCAR SMITH SCOREKEEPER’S BEACH BLAST GAME #1 COMMENTARY:

OSCAR SMITH: 0 - 2 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 9 - 0 // 11 - 9 - 3
TALLWOOD.... : 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 3 - 0 // 3 - 6 - 3
WP: Loudon (1-3) LP: Ferguson (0-2)
HR: Lorkiewicz (1)

OS scored 2 runs in the top of the 2nd on a 2-strike, 2-out, 2-run triple by freshman Kody Comparto (1st varsity game). Otherwise, mostly quiet for the next 3 innings (give or take a couple of errors, base running mistakes by both teams).

OS's David Loudon ('13) faced just 12 batters over the first 4 innings. In the 5th, after allowing Tallwood’s 1st hit of the day to #3 Magana, #6 Ferguson grounded into a FC, #4 French hit a base-hit to RF that was cut on its way to third and caught Ferguson rounding too far from 2B for the 2nd out. Loudon then picked-off French to end the threat (he picked-off 3 Tallwood runners @ 1B today).

Tallwood's Ferguson held Oscar Smith to 2 runs on 2 hits through 5 innings before an ugly 6th inning by each side.

Top of 6th:
Stephen Lorkiewicz ('12) walked to start the inning; then, Conner Smith ('14) chopped a ball to deep 3B and 3B threw the ball late & well wide of 1B (allowing Lorkiewicz to score & Smith to end up at 2B). Jarrett McNeil ('12) walked; then, Thomas Packert ('15) laid down a beautiful bunt for a base hit to load the bases. After a K by Loudon, Remy Johnston ('13) chopped a 2 RBI double down the LF line. Then, Comparto hit a hard ground ball to 3B that was mishandled & Daniel Barnett ('15) followed with a bunt base-hit that was thrown away at 1B, allowing 2 more runs to score & Barnett ending up at 3B. After Jae Damewood ('14) walked, Tallwood made a pitching change. Then, Lorkiewicz hit his first career HR (a 3-run smash over the LF fence). Conner Smith ('13) followed with a short hop double to the LF fence, but was stranded there... 9 runs on 6 hits, 3 walks, and 3 Tallwood errors.

Bottom of the 6th:
With an 11-0 lead, Loudon gets the first batter to ground out to short. Then, pinch-hitter #5 (?) singled. #1 Jackson then hit a fly ball to RF that could not be picked up in the sun by the new RF (subbed in), dropping in for a hit to put runners at 1st & 2nd. The next batter grounded into a fielder's choice for the 4-6 2nd out. #20 Montgomery then dropped a base-hit into CF to score Tallwood's first run. After another single by #21 Felts loaded the bases, #3 Magana hits a routine fly ball to RF that this time almost hit the Oscar Smith RF in the head as he battled the sun and dropped the ball which scored 2 more Tallwood runs. The next batter grounded out to end the inning... 3 runs on 4 hits, 1 error.

The 7th inning was uneventful for both teams.

OSCAR SMITH:
S. Lorkiewicz: 1-3, HR, 2R, 3RBI, BB
C. Smith: 2-4, 2B, R
T. Packert: 2-3, 2B, 2R
R. Johnston: 1-1, 2B, R, 2RBI, 3HBP
K. Comparto: 2-3, 3B, R, 2RBI, HBP
--------------------------------
D. Loudon: 6 IP, 6H, 3R, 1ER, 0BB, 1K
Tad Ennis: 1 IP, 0H, 0R, 1BB, 1K

TALLWOOD:
Montgomery: 1-3, R, RBI
Felts: 1-3
Magana: 1-3
French: 1-3
#5 (?): 1-1, R
Jackson: 1-3
---------------------------------
Ferguson: 5.1 IP, 6H, 10R, 9ER, 4BB, 5K, 3HBP

While some SED teams are flaunting their wears in such far-flung places as FL and SC, some schools like Oscar Smith and Hickory decided to stay closer to home. In a matchup of non-traditional baseball powers (or is it traditional non-baseball powers? always get the two confused), Oscar Smith crushed Tallwood 11-3. It was a 2-0 game until the 6th when OS bats came alive and Tallwood's defense had a total meltdown. Not that familiar with Tallwood's roster, but the starting pitcher was left in way too long. To the coach's credit, Tallwood did have another game right after the OS game. But that doesn't explain its awful base running and poor defense. Tallwood had runners picked off at first on 3-4 occassions and caught in rundowns at least 3 times. Not sure if OS was just that good yesterday, or Tallwood was that bad, but I am leaning towards the latter. I will post my thoughts on the Hickory v. Hanover game as part of another thread.

Hickory is starting to make me into a believer. I took one look at the 1-loss Hanover team yesterday, and thought to myself that the boys from the SED didn't stand a chance. Hanover definitely passed the eye test. Every player 6 ft. or over and at least 180lbs. They looked like a D-1 ballclub. In an interesting decision, Matt Campbell opened on the mound for Hickory. He had trouble finding the strike zone in the first, walking 3 batters, and at the end of the 1st, Hanover was ahead 5-1. The romp was on. But not so fast smart guy (that would be me). Hickory answered with 7 runs of its own in the 2nd. Campbell went 3 2/3, and Hickory's relief pitching and defense was superb the rest of the way. Hanover only managed one more run the entire game, and Hickory won by a count of 13-6. Anyone know where I can find the bandwagon?

The highlight of the game, however, was probably the tossing of 2 Hickory coaches after arguing a called strike by the 1st base umpire. Not sure what was said, but when the head coach returned to the dugout he stood about 2 feet in front of the area designated for players and coaches to stand, and continued to stare down the 1st base ump. The ump called time as a pitch was thrown and hit for a base hit by the Hickory batter, and gave the coach the international signal for you're outta here! The Hickory fans went ballistic (more so about the timeout in the middle of a pitch and hit than the tossing of the coach). Later, when another Hickory coach left the field purportedly to go to the bathroom, he was also tossed by the 1st base ump for allegedly illegally communicating with the ejected coach. So one coach gets tossed for staring and not being in the designated area, and another for going to take a pee. Good stuff.

You love me so much. If I weren't already married, maybe I would give you a shot. I will try to do a better job in future posts...now that I know the board now has an official editor.

He gets "credit" for having another game after the first....? Did you mean in the Coach's "defense"? I would have thought an esteemed attorney would be armed with better syntax and diction.

Nansemond River 0R 5H 3E 3LOB

All of BE's runs came in the 5th. The leadoff hitter was walked. The next hitter squared to bunt offered at the ball and missed and the ball hit him and blue ruled it a HBP. Next batter tried to sacrifice the runners but base runner on second was cut down at third. After a double steal moved the runners to 2B and 3B, an errant throw to the plate on a ground ball to 2B plated both runners and allowed the hitter to go to 2B. Rest of the inning went ground ball out to 3B, single scoring 3rd run and strikeout.

Zach Vann collected 3 of NR's 5 hits in the game.
