WP: Spenser Carter, LP: Robert Fitzwater, SV: -

Nansemond River fielding continues to be their Achilles heel with 2 more errors leading to 3 unearned runs.  Bigger story was Spenser Carter with a complete game and 12 strikeouts.  Jake Tandy was 2-4.  Trevor Riggs of NR was 3-3 with a homerun.

Not saying Fitzwater should not have pitched, and not saying errors did not have an impact on this game, hits also would have helped, but why would you not throw your number 1 kid going to UNC as a pitcher. Doesn't this team have any other pitchers or arms they can go to in relief? Rhoads, RIggs, Savage, Obrien, and Boone.

I think that's a fair question.  However, with the benefit of hindsight it wouldn't have mattered if Zach Rice or even Sandy Koufax pitched last night.  Two things that are dogging this team making it irrelevant who the starting pitcher is; 1) inability to hit therefore score and 2) 13 unearned runs off of 10 errors in 3 games.  Half of those errors coming at the 3B position.  By starting a player at 3B last night that has hardly practiced at the position (if at all) this year put the player in a difficult position while also exposing they're searching for a solution. And credit must be given to Spenser Carter for pitching an outstanding game.

They have the most arms in the SED as far as guys that can actually throw and do a decent job. I totally agree with you though. I don't understand at all why he isn't throwing againist teams that are going to be at the top of the District come end of the year. You have to throw your best and not look past games.

However, with the benefit of hindsight it wouldn't have mattered if Zach Rice or even Sandy Koufax pitched last night.......( I disagree to a point, and please let me explain with proper manners...lol)

Presence on the mound has a huge factor. I'd bet you a paycheck every kid from Hickory looked at NR's lineup card to see if Zach Rice was pitching.  The hitters have a totally different mind set when you guys like Rice/Jones on the hill. He needs to be throwing all their big games WB, GB, Hickory, Grassfield.  I understand if you don't hit or play defense everyone will struggle, but when you have the option of starting a shut down pitcher, that will keep you in a ball game regardless if your team isn't hitting will give you a chance to compete. Hopefully they get it turned around, it may take them a while, because I believe Riggs is the only everyday starter they had from last year. I know Rhoads was hit with the injury bug a few times last year, that's why I didn't include him with Riggs. So you got 8 other guys who are trying to figure each other out. Could be a difficult learning process.

I'm sure the newer bats are better then last years model, but lets also give credit to great hitters. I'm sure guys have gotten used to the bat as well.  Their are still a large number who struggle.

Great Bridge 10   Deep Creek 0

GB  10 runs, 8 hits, 0 errors

DC  0 runs, 2 hits, 6 errors

In a 5 inning game, Logan Harrelson looked good, throwing 4 innings of 1 hit ball. Chris Mathews threw the last inning (1 hit) to complete the shut out.  DC defense struggled.  6 errors led to 5 base runners, 3 of which scored.  All 10 runs were unearned.  Deep Creek's pitcher (#1) pitched well allowing no walks and 7 hits in 4+ innings, but when combined with the errors, he could not get a quick 1-2-3 inning.

Great Bridge:

D.Smith 2hits

C.Cody 1 hit 1 hbp

T.Lane 2 hits

D.Grady 3 runs

Deep Creek

#4 1 hit

#12 1 hit

Dawgs,

You are right...the game was in the snow.

Great Bridge 11 runs, 13 hits, 2 errors

Lakeland 1 run, 1 hit, 4 errors

I can honestly say I have never seen a game played where the dirt infield was white with snow.  The ump said "I have been doing this for 20 years and have never seen anything like this"  The ball, on a line drive to the outfield kicked up snow as it rolled to the outfielder. Crazy stuff.

Lakeland:

Lakeland pitcher struggled tonight but what was most noticable on a game with 37 degree temps was that he faced 33 batters over 5 1/3 innings. Figure out that pitch count.

#13  1-2 double and rbi

Great Bridge:

Connor Jones, Glendon Barcliff and Devin Grady combined on a one hit, one run game.   Jones faced 12 batters over 4 innings striking out 8, Barcliff pitched the 5th inning allowing an unearned run and Grady pitched a scoreless 6th inning.

D.Smth 3-4

T.Lane 2-4

C.Cody 2-3, BB

K.Mathews 1-3, BB

A.Newell 2-4, 2 doubles3 rbi's

E.Nittenger 1-1, double 3 rbi's

L.Harrelson 1-2, 2 BB's

How does NR look like a 'team to beat'?  By several accounts, they do not play very good defense. Yes, Rice is a great pitcher but you have to a) play defense behind him and b) score runs. So far, NR has proven to be nothing more than middle of the SED.

GF, however, is looking solid with wins over NR, WB. Stallings will be a stud.

Yes they do.  To answer the question directly, I believe the team ERA is somewhere in the low 3s.  I would also suggest that four games isn't a tremendous sample size.  I recall a relatively young, but very talented team, who started off slowly last season.  By the end of the year, things had come together, and they got hot...winning the SED tournament.  If the proverbial ball had bounced a bit differently, they would have likely been in the state tournament as well.

Bottom line, there is a lot of baseball to be played.   We'll know a lot more about all of the clubs in the district in a few weeks.

Great Bridge 12  Kings Fork 2 in 5 innings

GB  12 runs, 11 hits, 1 error

KF 2 runs, 4 hits, 2 errors

KF had 4 hits and got 5 walks but could only muster single runs in the first and fourth inning mostly due to having 3 runners thrown out on the bases.  GB got 2 runs in the first, 1 in the second, 6 in the third and 3 in the fourth.

KF:

#25 2 IP, 2 bb, 9 hits, 0 k

#33 2 IP, 1 bb, 2 hits, 0 k

#4; walk, single, 4 stolen bases

#25; walk, single

#23; nice sac bunt, single

#3; walk, single

GB

E.Nittenger 1 1/3 IP, 4 bb, 0 hits, 2 k

C.Mathews 1 2/3 IP, 1 bb, 1 hit, 3 k

C.Hinkle 1 IP, 0 bb, 3 hits, 1 k

C.Cody 1 IP, 0 bb, 0 hits, 1 k

D.Smith 1-3, triple, hbp

C.Hinkle 2-4, single, double

Cody 1-2 double, hbp

K.Mathews 1-1, single, walk, hbp

B.Cooksey 1-1 triple, 2 rbi
