Western Branch 4, Indian River 2

Can’o’Corn – you would be pleased to know that there was no PA system. Even if there had been, Ryan Bennett issued no walks so IR would not have had the opportunity to play the Mexican Hatdance.

WB scored first, in the top of the 2nd, when Shane Johnsonbaugh drove in Kenny Cassidy who had walked. Johnsonbaugh scored as the result of Michael Donovan’s FC followed by an error when Indian River attempted to complete a 1-2-3 double play. WB added another run in the top of the 3rd. Garrett Brooks walked, advance to second on a WP, was sacrificed to third on a bunt and scored on Nick Thompson’s single. Indian River scored a single run in the bottom of the 4th. Simons opened the inning with a single, advanced to second on a WP and scored on Roger Hall’s single. WB scored its 4th and final run in the 7th when Brooks singled, advanced to third on an errant pickoff attempt and scored on Brandon Doggett’s sacrifice fly. Indian River threatened in the bottom of the 7th. White doubled to open IR’s half of the inning and advanced to third on a FC when an attempt was made to get White going to third. With runners at the corners, Bennett induced a 6-4-3 double play. White crossed the plate during the double play but was sent back to 3rd when the umpire ruled interference had occurred at second base. White then scored on a passed ball but the IR threat was ended when the next batter grounded out.

Western Branch claimed a share of the regular season Southeastern District title by defeating Great Bridge 4-2 at Great Bridge.

Garrett Brooks, WB’s lead-off hitter, scored the game’s first run, leading off the game with a single, advancing to second on a misplayed sacrifice bunt, advancing to third on a FC and scoring on Bobby Barefoot’s FC. WB left the bases loaded in the top of the 3rd.

Great Bridge scored their 2 runs of the game in the bottom of the 4th. With one out, Hunter Higgerson singled, Jimmy Cody walked and Brian Beard laced a 2-run double to left center. Steven Dudley and Preston Grissom both followed Cody with hits to load the bases. Balzar hit a grounder sharply to the right side which CJ McAndrews, WB’s first baseman, fielded with a diving stop and threw the runner out at the plate for the second out of the inning. The next batter flew out to center field to end the inning.

Shane Johnsonbaugh led off the top of the 6th with an infield single and Alex Hunt reached on a misplayed sacrifice bunt. Michael Donovan executed a sacrifice bunt up the first baseline to advance Johnsonbaugh to third and Hunt to second. Brandon Doggett followed with a 2-rbi single up the middle to regain the lead for Western Branch, 3-2.

Great Bridge threatened again in the 6th. Steven Dudley reached on a fielding error (ball thrown high over first base) and was advanced to second on a well-executed bunt by Preston Grissom. Balzar then reached on another fielding error (ball thrown high over first base.) However, Balzar was picked off in a run down (1-6-3) for the second out of the inning. With Dudley sitting on third, the next batter hit the ball into short center field where Brooks made a diving catch to end the inning and the threat.

Western Branch added an insurance run in the top of the 7th. With one out, Barefoot reached on a shortstop error, Kenny Cassidy reached on an infield single with a wicked backspin, and Alex Hunt reached on a fielder’s choice / error when the shortstop's throw to third pulled the third baseman off the bag. With bases loaded and one out, Michael Donovan hit a deep fly ball to bring Barefoot in for WB’s final score of the evening.

In the bottom of the 7th, the side was retired in order with 2Ks and a flyout.

Great Bridge Hitting Notables:
Beard 1-3, DB, 2rbis
Hunter Higgerson 2-3, run and intentional walk.

Western Branch Hitting Notables:
Barefoot rbi
Brooks 2-2, run, intentional walk
Doggett 2-4, 2 rbis
Donovan rbi

Great Bridge 6, Western Branch 1

Both teams had runners on base in each of the first two innings but neither scored. In the top of the 3rd, Great Bridge struck early and often. Charlie Cody, in the 9th batting slot, opened the inning with a double, followed by Justin Lee’s single, Hunter Higgerson’s sac fly (with a great catch by Bobby Barefoot in left field), Jimmy Cody’s double, Beard’s intentional walk to the open first base and Steven Dudley’s triple. The game scorer ruled either Cody’s double or Dudley’s triple an error by Brooks, the center fielder, but this poster didn’t think either was technically an error. On Cody’s, the center fielder turned the wrong direction on a ball over his head and on Dudley’s, the centerfielder was going so hard for the ball that, while he caught it initially, he dropped it when he slammed into the centerfield fence. Brooks slammed so hard that the noise was loud even 400’ away. The game was delayed while an ambulance was called for Brooks. The 4 runs scored during the inning proved to be more than enough for Great Bridge to claim the victory.

Western Branch scored its only run in the bottom of the 5th. CJ Mc Andrews led off, hitting the ball high off the top of the 3rd baseman’s glove. (Again, the game scorer ruled it an error but I felt it would have taken more than ordinary effort to have fielded it and thrown the ball to first before the runner reached. . . . . Very tough scorer.) Ryan Bennett, in the one hole as Brook’s replacement, advanced McAndrews to second on a sac bunt. McAndrews advanced to third, when Kyle McPherson reached on an error, and scored the only Western Branch run of the game on Nick Thompson’s single. WB did manage to load the bases but the threat was ended with an inning-ending double play.

Great Bridge added to their tally in the top of the 7th. With one out and no runners on base, Hunter Higgerson executed a great bunt for a single and scored on Jimmy Cody’s deep fly ball double. Steven Dudley reached on a FC when the shortstop unsuccessfully attempted to throw out Cody advancing to third. The next 2 batters were issued walks, one forcing Cody in for Great Bridge’s 6th run of the game.
McAndrews opened the bottom of the 7th with a double and Kyle McPherson joined him on the base paths by hitting a single up the middle. However, both were left stranded.

GB left 8 runners on base and WB left 9 on base.

Connor Jones was the winning pitcher for Great Bridge with 5IP, 4H, 1R, 3K, 4BB.
