Since my son will be attending one of the schools (Delta State)in the conference in the Fall of this year I can tell you a little bit about the conference and just some general info on Southern Arkansas. The GulfSouth conference is very competetive DII with several very good teams. Southern Arkansas was 46-12 in 2008 and finished with a conference record of 17-3 good for 2nd in the GSC. Delta State was 48-11 and won the conference title going 17-1. Ouachita Baptist had another great season at 51-16 and finished the NCAA CWS runnerup. West Alabama was 45-13 in the East Division of the GSC. So there is very competetive baseball down that way. Southern Arkansas has an enrollment of 3100+ students which is slightly on the smaller end of that conference's schools. Head coach Allen Gum has a career 127-47 record at that school. Their final ranking was No. 12. I don't know anything specific about the facilities or the coaching staff unfortunately.
Three Bagger,

I graduated from Delta State. We visited with my son last spring and met the coaches. We did not get to watch a game due to rain. The coach called my son last week and asked if he was still interested in DSU and would be coming to watch him in the next couple of weeks after we got a couple games behind us. Powerhouse D11 and a great school. What position does your son play?
Sunshinesmom,

My son is a centerfielder/leadoff type guy. He is a lefthanded pitcher also in high school but he was recruited for outfield. We were going to go to Delta State around Feb. 20th and stay a few days to watch them play but a change in our high school scrimmage schedule caused us not to be able to make the trip. They were off to somewhat of a slow start but are really rolling now--seven games in a row with ten or more runs! What position does your son play?
Sunshinesmom,

Maybe our sons will both be freshmen together. Originaly, we never even thought about leaving Texas for college, but once we went up and saw the school, it was exactly what I imagined an "old South" university would look like. I mean that in a complimentary way. We felt at home even though things are a little different from Texas. The facilities are top notch. I'm sure with you being a graduate, your son is probably giving them some "extra" consideration.
