My son plays in the SCBL now.
I believe your experience will vary depending on which team you play with. My son's team resides in team houses, for which you are supposed to pay rent (I think I'm the only fool to actually pay, though. Our team ownership is extremely disorganized; they aren't all that way, I'm sure.)
Yes, players can work (our team was promised part time work that never materialized).
Yes, the teams practice on off days.
Competition is strong. Teams are made up of players from many parts of the country (and even some foreign countries)and from all divisions. Some teams had to wait for players to complete their post-season duties.
Pitching is the real thing. But so is the hitting. All wood-bat of course, but home runs do happen.
Facilities vary, from "legacy" to new.
