Couldn't agree more with CPLZ. Coach Callahan at SIUC is a class man. I know they are rebuilding right now; they lost most of their position players. You should check their roster and news as to who they have recruited for next season to see where the focus/needs seem to be. Carbondale speaks for itself...pretty nice weather. Great communications department and offers the other state university majors (business, liberal arts...)

The field is nice too...it has the short bermuda grass. There is a hill behind the first base line for people to sit (usually lots of students). Also, they play in the Missouri Valley, which, IMO, is one of the best midwest conferences.

If you look at SIU-Edwardsville (D2 program), I know it's less than 20 miles from St. Louis. They are usually very competitive and play at a nice facility (I think they are ranked nationally for D2). In addition, they occassionally play at an independent minor league stadium in Sauget, Illinois (close by). I don't know much about the academics...sorry.
