SIUE is currently going through the transition phase from DII to DI. Therefore, it is currently not eligible for NCAA playoff competition. For 2009, the baseball team has an independent schedule I believe but I think they play all but one or two of the Ohio Valley Conference schools. SIUE is officially a member of the Ohio Valley Conference, however, its sports will not begin competing until like the 2010-2011 school year or later..
It is a very nice school. It is a hidden gem right outside of St.Louis. The baseball program is very good and they have a great coach in Collins. Like Bulldog said they are in transition to D-1 and will join the OVC in 2010. I believe they already have 3 verbals from Illinois.

I looked at there schedule for this year and it is kind of cool. They only have 6 home games but they play some good programs. I think they play 6 OVC teams this year

I graduated from SIUE and hit the field or sat on my butt for a year there. I love the school. Baseball program does well. I have had many players go there. They have enjoyed the experience and graduated. One was my assistant coach and now is the head coach taking over for me when I resigned last year to follow my girl play softball. They have upgraded their facilities and continue to do so. Oh, and it is about 10 minutes away from my house. Division II school making the change over to D-I. What else do you want to know?
Their clubhouse and locker rooms next to the field are sub-par compared to other D-1's. The field itself is very nice!

The campus is nice, but with less than 4000 on-campus students, it doesn't have that big-college feel. That can be good or bad.

Have heard conflicting comments about their Coaching staff.
Coach Collins seems like a nice-enough guy, but have heard that he is tough to please. Not a touchy-feely type. Again, could be good or bad?
Coach Collins is almost done I believe. I know Coach Stoeklin does all the recruiting and is taking over when Collins retires.

The size of school is growing. In a couple of years it will be a pretty big university and they are doing a lot of construction. I know they are in progress for a new basketball stadium thats nice and they are making a better wieght room as well.

Their clubhouse and locker rooms being NEXT TO the field beats out SEMO.

There are many things that SIUE will need to do in the upcoming years to bring their facilities and their support staff up to a DI level. For example, I don't think they even have an athletic weight room. I think they share facilities with the Student Rec Center. Also, I'm pretty sure their athletic training department with pretty small so it may need to be expanded as well. A little offtopic, but does anybody think that SIUE will add football in the near future since they will be DI?

biggerpapi, I believe it was the Great Lakes Conference or something like that in which SIUE competed in while they were DII. And yes they used wooden bats during conference games. From what I was told (former teammate plays there) SIUE would still use aluminum in nonconference games. The Ohio Valley does NOT use wooden bats so I would expect SIUE to quickly drop the wooden bats probably as soon as they are no longer a part of the old DII conference.
My son Scott attends SIUE and will be playing baseball with them as well. He graduated from lincoln land community college and transfrered to SIUE. He has been very pleased with the campus, academics and baseball so far(6 weeks or so.) They do have a weight room in their athletic center which is going through some major expansion and improvements. The have about 13,000 students at the school so I would differ on only 4000 staying on campus. The campus stretches over 2600 sq. miles and is a very attractive campus. At this point we are very pleased with Scott's choice of schools.

I think what they were trying to say is that SIU-E is largely a commuter school and therefore only about half the students actually reside on campus. The rest live in and around the St. Louis metro area.

If your worried about a coach that isn't touchy-feely and babies the kids, this isn't little league. This is big time college baseball, the coaches are sometimes mean and demand things from these young adults. I hope people realize that as these kids get older, and as parents your not going to have the say your used to having with these travel teams and parent run organizations that alot of kids are in these days where they are coddled.

I think you meant 2600 acres.

On-Campus students is around 30% of undergrad, which would put it a little over 3000, but it is growing!

I think you need to read my post again!
Did I say I was worried about it?
I said it could be good or bad.

Maybe "touchy-feely" was the wrong description, maybe "personal" and "hands-on" would be better.

There are coaches that are very demanding, but are more personal and hands-on about it. (Dick Vermeil)

And there are some who are very remote and impersonal, but get the job done.(Tony LaRussa)

That was me that I asked about football. One reason I asked was the fact that they've joined a conference that is historically a football conference. Sure where I go to school (SEMO) is not a powerhouse in football (one conference win last year) but Eastern Illinois is normally ranked in the FCS, Jacksonville State is highly ranked this year, and there's some pretty good football throughout the conference. Also, the OVC does not have Men's S****r and my dad tells me that is because of the conference originally being mainly a football conference.

I'd like to see SIUE get football. I don't really think they'd need a new stadium if they could otherwise get the program started. They have Korte Stadium which could likely be modified slightly to make it dual-use and Edwardsville High School has a nice complex with Field Turf now so I couldn't see why they couldn't share. It works elsewhere. For example down here, Cape Central High School plays its home varsity football games at Houck Stadium on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University. Depending mainly on the s****r schedule I believe, Cape Central plays some of its home games on Thursday nights if the college s****r team is in town.
