Well, I know these games are next week but I think that the SED will end up with at least 4 teams going to Regionals and possibly as many as 6.  Part of that is GB beats Gloucester this week.

Probables: GB and NR.  Either WB or GF gets a spot.

Good Chance: Either Lakeland or KF

Possibles: Hickory or IR, Deep Creek,

Longer Shot: OS.

To get more than half of the district to regionals would be kind of cool.  Of course they could end up with as few as 2 or 3.

Here is the Composite Schedule Of Conference Tournaments with SED Teams.

Please post any corrections.  If you prefer to see the schedule by conferences, the first entry in this topic has that and will be updated as scores are reported (as will this entry.)

Menchville pitcher kept Hickory hitters off balance, allowing Menchville to take a 2-0 lead  Hickory narrowed the margin when Christian Lowry hit a solo home run in the bottom of the 3rd or 4th inning (reporting from memory.)  Hickory tied it in the bottom of the 5th. The game remained at 2-2 until the bottom of the 7th.  Hickory loaded the bases and with 2 outs, the winning run was singled in.  (Twice previously Hickory had left the bases loaded.)  Colby Rudis pitched the first 6 1/3 innings.  Connor Eason pitched the last 2/3 of the 7th thereby collecting the win.

If true, that would have GB and Hickory advancing to regional play.  Two SED schools moving on.

With WB and either KF or LL in as well a GF, NR and DC win would make 7.

I think DC lost to Wilson yesterday, thereby eliminating them.  Seven would have been unreal.

KF beat Lakeland 11-1 yesterday, and will be moving on to the 4A South Regional.  They will play the winner of NR/Denbigh for the Ironclad Championship.

Fun Fact:  According to a couple of sources (MaxPreps, etc.), OS had the toughest Strength of Schedule in the entire state of VA this year with an opponent winning % of .638.

The first part of your post is a long shot!  They would have to beat WB, and then win the Championship Game against the Grassfield/Woodside winner.  Not that it can't happen, but it would be one heck of an accomplishment.

I'll buy the 2nd part all day long.  Presently, Western Branch, Hickory, Nansemond River, Great Bridge, Grassfield and Woodside all reside in the Top 15 in the state.  When your Oscar Smith, you've had to play all of them.  Some of them twice.

I have heard a lot of complaints from fans and parents about the new conferences, but I wonder if the old SED teams aren't glad.  In the past, only two SED teams would advance to Regionals. On many occasions, the third or fourth place teams would have been competitive in another district and advanced to Regionals.  Now, as luv and others have pointed out, Great Bridge, Hickory and Western Branch are already advancing to Regionals and others are sure (or likely) to follow.  If you are a SED fan or team, that should be a decided benefit of the new conferences.

All true.  And now they will probably play teams that they may never have seen before because undoubtedly in places around Richmond there are teams that will get to Regions that never could break through before.  There have to be more KF stories out there, schools that were always in the middle or bottom of their district and now are going to a Region.  IMO that is as big a surprise as any.

I don't know what the final records were for the SED teams but I think they all won at  8 games and most were over 10.

Hickory and Great Bridge are tied and going into the 8th inning.

Great Bridge jumped ahead early, going up 3-0 after 2 innings and taking advantage of a couple of Hickory errors.  Hickory scored 1 and added 2 in the top of the 7th to tie the game.  Great Bridge was able to load the bases in the bottom of the 7th but was not able to plate a run.

Great Bridge defeats Hickory, 4-3 to win the PenSouth conference tournament in the bottom of the 9th.  The bottom of the 9th started with a hit batter who then was sac bunted to second base.  With one out, Hickory elected to load the bases by intentionally walking the next 2 batters.  The winning run was then walked in.  (Those intentional walks can bite back, particularly when the pitcher is not an experienced pitcher.)

Here are the final records for SED teams.  A bullet denotes those who are not "finished" and have moved into Regional play.

* Western Branch     20-2

* Nansemond River   19-2

* Great Bridge         18-4

* Hickory           16-6

Grassfield         14-8

* Kings Fork         13-8

Oscar Smith          11-11

Lakeland          9-11

Indian River          9-13

Deep Creek          5-13

This might not be perfect, but its close!

HAMPTON — Woodside's regional-clinching win over Grassfield on Thursday night should be remembered for a masterful performance on the mound by Drew Moyer. But it also will be remembered for one of the craziest finishes imaginable.

Moyer limited the Grizzlies to two hits over seven innings, which was just enough for the No. 2 Wolverines to escape with a 2-1 win in the Monitor-Merrimac semifinals at War Memorial Stadium. It came two weeks after Moyer had been shelled in a 9-1 loss to Grassfield at Harbor Park.

The win sent the Wolverines (19-3) into Saturday afternoon's championship game against No. 1 Western Branch. More important, it clinched a spot in the 6A South regionals.

"I knew it was a must-win situation," said Moyer, who didn't allow a hit until the sixth inning. "But we just had to treat it like another game and come out and play baseball."

Moyer had lost three consecutive decisions since a 6-0 start but had a full week of rest since his last start, a 7-1 loss to Western Branch in a one-game playoff. From the start, he looked like a different pitcher. He got three outs on four pitches in the first inning.

"The story tonight was Drew," Woodside coach Kevin Hare said. "His last three outings, he had the ball up and he was struggling with his arm slot. He's gotten more into a three-quarters arm slot trying to get a little more movement.

"Grassfield's a very good baseball team, and it seemed like they were having a hard time squaring the ball up tonight. It was all Drew. His pitches were down and there was a lot of vertical movement. The story tonight was Drew, no doubt about it."

Well, Drew and the ending.

With Grassfield down to its last chance in the top of the seventh, Austin Obenour led off with a walk. Brett Smith then sacrificed him over to second base. Kevin Lambert then hit a comebacker to the mound, and Obenour stayed put.

With two outs, Mikey Lasko swung and missed at strike three. But the home plate umpire ruled catcher Chris Henley had not caught it, so he threw down to first base to record the out. Instead, he air-mailed his throw into right field.

Obenour had broken back to second base and then began jogging to third when he realized what had happened. Backing up the play, right fielder Nick Arendas tracked down the ball and threw home. Arendas' throw was perfect, and Henley applied the tag for the final out.

"Coach Hare always tells us to back up the play," Arendas said. "When I saw the ball go over (the first baseman's) head, my eyes lit up because I knew it was coming to me. I just tried to make the best throw I could, and Henley made a great play by catching the ball on one hop and blocking the plate."

It was a close play, but neither Obenour nor his coaches argued the call. Hare said it was all unnecessary because Henley caught the third strike.

"I thought the batter was called out," Hare said. "Chris Henley didn't drop the ball, so I thought the game was over. I guess Henley thought there was some doubt, so he threw the ball down. But he broke his rhythm coming up the line, which is a big no-no.

"Nick Arendas … what can I say? That was a spot-on throw to the plate and Henley makes the tag. Hey, that was the most drama in the whole game."

There wasn't much offense. Woodside took a 1-0 lead in the third on Mason Adamson's single. The Wolverines doubled the margin in the fifth on Josh Welcher's RBI groundout.

Woodside moved only three runners into scoring position and scored two of them.

WOODSIDE 2, GRASSFIELD 1

Grassfield;000;001;0 — 1 2 2

Woodside;001;010;x — 2 5 2

WP: Moyer (7-3). LP: Stallings (5-2). Records: Grassfield 14-9; Woodside 19-3.

While we are past the conference level, just wanted to take a second and congratulate the SED in general for a successful season.  WB and Hickory just advanced to their respective Final Fours.  Nansemond River and Kings Fork also had an opportunity to do the same.  Great Bridge, if not for the injury bug, may have challenged Hickory for that right as well.  Is there another district in Virginia that had that kind of success top to bottom?

Not too shabby.  Best of luck to WB and Hickory as they advance!
