I know. The Sox won in spite of signing Drew. They win on pitching. I have a lot of trouble rooting for Drew. I've never liked them. I don't like his approach to the game. I have to look at the name on the front of the uniform, not the back.
Drew was typical of a player coming to the Boston market with a big contract. He produced about half of what was expected of him during the regular season but he's going to get some big hits and have some big games for this team, if not this year then next. With Brandon Moss and Jacoby Ellsbury knocking at the door, the future of Boston's outfield looks bright. Oh yeah, Boston wins this series in four.

The RS overpaid for Drew and probably knew so going in. Drew and Dice K have the same agent, Scott Boras. Dan Shaughnessy says there is probably connectivity between the two deals, i.e "Take Drew and you get Dice K too". The Drew deal is one of the less sharp deals the Sox have made, but still better than Edgar "Rentawreck" Renteria.
Cards fans were amused at the Renteria signing, as he could never bear scrutiny. "So you signed WHERE Edgar????" Big Grin

And PopTime, you're right. DL Drew will have some big games....the year before his contract is up, rather like he did for Atlanta. Not before.

I've got no time for Drew. During the Cards game threads, TG, we used to have a pool going for when he's pull himself: "I've got trips on the dugout stairs in the bottom of the second", "I've got grass burn in the 4th", "I've got mal de mer in the 6th" Roll Eyes

That is a VERY old story. Shaughnessey is a big conspiracy theory guy. If this was so contrived, why did Drew void his contract with the Dodgers before the RS had even won the bid to negotiate with Dice-K? Nobody knew who what was in those sealed bids. And do you really think that the RS (Theo Epstein, not Haywood Sullivan) would throw another 70,000,000 on the fire on a player they didn't want because Boras threatened to walk, taking the 53M the Sox spent in bidding rights? C'mon Man, don't buy into it. Epstein liked Drew. His numbers weren't so bad last year.

His numbers weren't bad, .283, 20HR 100 RBI. The problem was 2007 was nearly the best year in his career, probably second to 2004 with ATL.

Deals get manipulated in every type of business, including baseball.

...because they said so in the newspaper?

I don't see professional athletics quite as transparent as some, I guess. He's not bad, but he's not a $70 mill player. I just have a hard time believing everything written in the newspapaer about pro baseball deals, word for word.

I just can't envision the meeting where the Red Sox Brass sat around the table and they all stretched their hands high to the sky begging for Drew. "OH, We just have to get DREW!! Nobody leaves till we get Drew! He hit .283! He deserves $70 Million." I think they are sharper than that. I could be 100% wrong. After all, they did sign Renteria. Maybe he is just hitting his stride. Smile

Rooting for the Angels even though Mike might be in my foursome if they lose. To state the obvious Friday's game is pivotal. If the Angels manage to pull it out they'll have the advantage, IMO, because they'll be able to jump on Dice-K the second time around. If they lose it, there's always next year.

None of the bids were public at the time Drew voided his Dodger contract. As far as them saying "We have to get Drew", ect..., if we've learned anything about Theo Epstein here in Boston, it's that he DOES have a tendency to "fall in love" with certain players almost to the point of obsession. Rentaria was one, Lugo is another one. These are players he pursues relentlessly it seems until he either gets them, or they become unavailable. I think Drew was one of these players. But I don't think I'd go as far as to say they went to Boras and Drew beforehand (that's tampering by the way) and struck this Drew/Dice-K double-deal.

Is public disclosure relevant to an international pro baseball deal?

I don't believe anything I read without 4 or 5 verifications.

I admire Theo's passion. He has a ring. I'm not saying Drew was tied to Dice-K. I don't know. Would it shock me or you or anyone? Smile
