For Spalding DeVito, Arndt, Brinkely and Patton pitched. With Patton closing the game
For Riverdale Baptist Winegardner, and their shortstop pitched, I do not know his name.
Spalding scored when Kevin Moran drew a basesloaded walk and i dont remember exactly how they scored the other run.
Riverdale scored their lone run when a base hit to the outfield rolled under the glove of a diving Paul DeVito and allowed one run to score, but DeVito recovered by throwing a strike to home plate in the air to throw out the potential second run. The ball beat the runner to the plate by atleast 4 steps.
A highlight play was made by Spalding's SS Jeff Kemp a ball was sharply hit back up the middle Kemp fielded it cleanly and made a perfect throw across his body and the runner was out by two steps.
There were alot of K's on both sides, but it was possibly due to the windy and cold conditions.
One guy on Riverdale hit a shot to RF and if it wasn't for the wind it would have been a homerun
This really was a great game. If this is an indication of what we can expect this season, we fans are in for a real treat! In fact, a professional scout in attendance commented that the game was the best he had seen in a while, including the recent college games he had attended.
The recap giving by AJ & NM 1021 is on the money. All of the pitchers were very good. But the starters, Paul Devito (Spalding) and Tommy Winegardner (RBS), were outstanding posting fastball velocities from 87 to 91 mph, and excellent off speed pitches to back up the heaters. In addition, both had good command of all of thier pitches.
With pitching at this level, I think a plug for the boys behind the dish is in order. Travers (RBS) and Palmer (Spalding) both are very accomplished catchers and did a great job receiving the entire day.
To add a few more details to the previous game notes - The second pitcher for RBS was Matt Selmer (Sophmore); Spalding scored it's second run on an RBI single by the first baseman, Woods; Carl Travers had the 2 out RBI hit to right field for RBS; and the long fly ball hit to right that the wind held from a HR was hit by Winegardner (RBS).
The 2009 Big South Conference was well represented at this game with Riverdale players Winegardner (Coastal Carolina) and Travers (Radford), and Spalding players Devito (Radford), Kemp (Radford), Hillsinger (Radford), and Patton (Radford).
I know this seems like old news being a week after the fact. Thanks for bearing with me.
