Sorry for this Q because I know I've seen general speed requirements for colleges and prospects on the forum several times. But I can't find it. Could anyone repost them?

Anyway, my son had two baseball camps recently & he was excited about the timed running. He was asking me about marking the 40 & 60 in the yard so that he could practice them. I thought I'd dig up the speed estimates for recruiting to help motivate him.

He just turned 14 & his best times were 4.0 to 1st, 7.45 in the 60, and (I think, but I can't remember) 4.75 in the 40.

Thanks much!
Andrew

He's faster than 95% of all the high school SENIORS in America.

Then...It doesn't make sense that he would run a 7.45 in the 60.

Well, he's a lefty, so he's got a jump from the batter's box. Also, he's been pretty erratic with timed runs (sometimes gets off to bad starts, etc.), so I think that might be the reason for the speed fluctuation (or maybe timing error). But he was consistently within a tenth or so of the fastest kids, so I think that got him excited about running (and winning a couple of Gatorades at the one camp Smile

Thanks!
Andrew

Speed is often the most over looked tool for players to work on (mainly because they don't know how to get faster. The truth is if your not getting faster the chance of playing at the next level gets smaller. Every level you move up the speed of the game gets faster and faster.
By mproving running mechanics players can knock 2 to 3 tenths off there times.

http://hsbaseballweb.com/pro-scouting/rating_system.htm

This is the MLB rating system:

60 Yard Dash:
8: 6.4 seconds
7: 6.5-6.6 seconds
6: 6.7-6.8 seconds
5: 6.9-7.0 seconds
4: 7.1-7.2 seconds
3: 7.3-7.4 seconds
2: 7.5 seconds +

Home To First (Left Side):
8: 3.9 seconds
7: 4.0 seconds
6: 4.1 seconds
5: 4.2 seconds
4: 4.3 seconds
3: 4.4 seconds
2: 4.5 seconds

Tell your son to keep working hard, because it will pay off later. Although, the 60-yard time is what gets you noticed at most showcases, scouts seem to like the home to first time. If your school has a good track coach he may be able to offer your son some helpful hints on improving his times. Good Luck.
