Okay, so we all know Sportsquest and Richmond Braves apparently went their separate ways. Now I get an email (somehow I got on a mailing list I guess) about "Fall Team Training" with Sportsquest Academy.

When I Call the phone number today, I ask about the available Team Training this Fall / Winter, they inform me that the "Sportsquest Academy" won't be offering team training / practice facilities until Summer / Fall of 2012.

But first she asked me "Are you talking about Richmond Baseball offerings or Sportsquest offerings?"

What? Now I'm confused...and apparently so was she.

She then goes on to say that the Director of Baseball training for Sportsquest is located in the RISE Building. What?

I know RISE is now fielding a team again, but this is some muddy water.

So I'm getting advertisements for something they don't even have yet? (Sportsquest)

When I asked her where the "Indoor Sportsquest Baseball Academy" would be, she said "Rise? or Richmond Baseball?"

What?

That is a pretty good question.

Robin Rochelle is now listed as the Director of Baseball. 3rd or 4th Director according to my count. http://sportsquestacademy.com/sports/baseball.html

This link may give some insight to why there appears to be constant turnover. http://www.richmondbizsense.co...t-is-falling-behind/

Fenway - any info you can share publicly? Baseball related or overall?

The teams being fielded under the RISE Baseball banner have no affiliation with Sportsquest. They keep the RISE Baseball name for continuity purposes.

It is troubling to see good people like those who started RISE get pulled into such a mess. Hopefully, they dont end up getting hurt as a result of that transaction.

At present the only teaching I'm aware of in the RISE building are private lessons.

The Richmond Bizsense article you posted verified exactly what I've been told privately by former employees and business partners. You don't have to have a business degree to know that not paying YOUR employees, and YOUR landlord are BAD. Some of the comments at the end of the story are interesting.

I totally agree.

Overall, it appears one man's dream has turned into many people's nightmare.
I have received two emails in the last month or so to check out SportsQuest's new website. When I checked at the time, the RISE logo was on the new website. I scratched my head a bit, but knew that a RISE baseball team had reformed and maybe they were at their old location. However, the logo isn't on the site now.

Interesting article, btw. Thanks for sharing.

Yeah that's the ad I got in the email. I mentioned Sportsquest to a co worker and they went on a long tirade...something to do with Lacrosse. Them showing up to tournaments and the dues weren't paid (even though the parents had paid all dues in advance to Sportsquest) they didn't even follow through with buying their uniforms.
I know that SportsQuest was evicted from what was formerly known as the ACTS building (behind RISE) and the owner of that building took over its operation.

RBA South remains in that building and is unaffected by SQ's difficulties.

The main thing I would suggest to anyone considering the SQ baseball offer, or any other SQ offer for that matter, is don't put up any money in advance for anything.
Are they requiring payment up front for all 10 weeks' worth?

If so, I think it would be fair to ask if they are bonded. There have been instances in recent memory -- a case involving a Gold's Gym comes to mind -- where customers advanced payment and then never got what they paid for. When someone is already defaulting to creditors, just assuming that this won't happen to you is not wise.
I know Todd Fiegel had pitching lessions at SportsQuest last year when they were affiliated with the Braves, and Josh Scarsborough was there too. My son didn't participate in the 10 week "academy" last year, but know of others that did or took private lessons from both of these guys. All positive experiences from what I understand. Maybe the checks can be made out to the instructors?
I Understand that the transition of SportsQuest has been unconventional and troubling. SportsQuest Baseball Academy will starting its first Academy setting at the RISE facility on November 2nd at 7:30. The Academy training is known as Open Training , which allows players to train a total of 26 hours a month and will quickly become one of the most elite training programs in Virginia. Open Training is a time for athletes to improve performance through hitting and fielding repetition. During this time SportsQuest will provide minor league athletes and or coaches to assist baseball members equally in drills and performance training. This is a perfect program for players to freelance and work on individual aspects of the game, as well as a time to receive hitting and fielding guidance from professional players. From November 2nd to November 5th Open training will be provided for free (must call to inform instructors). SportsQuest is NOT interested in started any travel teams and will be seen only as a performance training facility. Many of the same instructors from the RISE baseball academy will be employed with SportsQuest Baseball Academy, as well as additional personnel. With the staff experience at SportsQuest Baseball Academy will rang from College players, Minor League Players, Major League Players and Major League Coaches. With addition of Mike Goff SportsQuest will have over 20 years of major and Minor league coaching experience. Please contact me if you have any questions, concerns or would like to take advantage of the free week of Open Training.

Thanks,
Chris Martin
