The Rangers lost 5-2 in Seatle.

So goes another year of opening day hopes and dreams.

quote:
“I grew up in Champaign, Illinois, midway between Chicago and St. Louis. At an age too tender for life-shaping decisions, I made one. While all my friends were becoming Cardinals fans, I became a Cub fan. My friends, happily rooting for Stan Musial, Red Schoendienst, and other great Redbirds, grew up cheerfully convinced that the world is a benign place, so of course, they became liberals. Rooting for the Cubs in the late 1940s and early 1950s, I became gloomy, pessimistic, morose, dyspeptic and conservative. It helped out of course that the Cubs last won the World Series in 1908, which is two years before Mark Twain and Tolstoy died. But that means, class of 1998, that the Cubs are in the 89th year of their rebuilding effort, and remember, any team can have a bad moment.” George Will

I grew up just north of Champaign, IL in a small farm town and am a die hard Cub and Rangers fan. I hate the Cardinals and the Yankees.

I know just how George Will feels.

I knew there was a reason I liked you KD. Don't worry -- this is our year. Big Lou is gonna bring 'em home winners. And even if he doesn't --- who cares? Cub fans have fun no matter how the club is doing - we are never suicidal because no matter the outcome there is no better place on earth to enjoy baseball than Wrigley Field. Like me you must have grown up listening to Jack Brickhouse do the play by play, huh?
There was nothing better growing up than hearing a drunken Harry Carey announce a game on a hot summer DAY back in the early 80's (they should of never put lights up at that field). I can still hear him slurring out the count while Steve Stone corrected him. Back when Ryne Sandberg, "Bull" Durham, Lee Smith and Ron Cey played for the team.
Jack Brickhouse right after Bozo the Clown.

It's weird that since Empire Carpet has gone national, and I see their commercials now on TV (588-2300), it brings back memories of watching WGN as a kid.

One of my first memories is of my Grandmother's neighbor who had retired from a factory. He was in his early 60's and spent every afternoon watching the Cubs play. I envied him, to have that freedom.
Bozo with Ringmaster Ned and the Grand Prize Game!!! Nothing better.

I used to run home from school to see the last inning or two on WGN with Jack "Hey,Hey" Brickhouse making the call. Then I'd go outside and play wall ball against the garage door replaying the entire game. Of course, the Cubs always won in my version.

Ernie Banks, Ron Santo, Billy Williams, Don Kessinger, Glenn Beckert, Randy Hundley, Fergie Jenkins and Kenny Holtzman... those were the days!

Rangers are at .500 on the year....let's hope this isn't the last time this year.

These early season west coast trips are a killer on my sleep schedule.

And Natural, I remember the day that my brother's name was drawn for the Grand Prize Game.....doofus that was on the show missed bucket number three.....oh well.

My mom ordered tickets to the show, it was a decade later before they were sent, and by then we were living in Germany.....
