My son is starting to get all the college letters with their questionnaire enclosed, and I noticed on more than one of them, they ask for his Social Security number.

Why do they need it? I can see needing it if a scholarship offer is going to be made, or for enrolling in the school, but we are a long way from that stage of the process.

Is there some purpose for asking the SS# that I am not considering? Anybody know?

I'm not in the habit of coughing up my or my kids' SS# casually, in this day and age. We've left that box blank on the ones we have filled out so far, but I am juste wondering .... why do they ask for it?

Rob,
Just state, "prefer not to disclose at this time". I have no reason why it is needed.

Actually over the next couple of years, it's gonna just say, do you have a ss#? Part in reason for legislation that will prohibit companies asking for ss# when not necessary.

I would discourage everyone from providing their Son's social security number on any questionnaire. I believe it is for clearinghouse purposes, but identity theft is a significant problem that should be taken into consideration when disclosing any personal data to any entity.
We have not provided it and it has not impacted my Sons recruitment process at all.
