Where Rangers pick and area prospects for MLB draft
The Texas Rangers pick 15th, 22nd, 45th and 49th in tonight’s first round and compensation round of Major League Baseball's First-Year Player Draft.
They have the extra picks after failing to sign Matt Purke last year and losing Marlon Byrd and Ivan Rodriguez in free agency.
The Rangers pick 22nd in the third round and 21st in the fourth through 30th rounds on Tuesday. They pick 21st in rounds 31-50 on Wednesday.
The Washington Nationals will pick first and many expect them to select catcher Bryce Harper, 17, only one season removed from his sophomore year in high school. Harper played at a junior college this season.
High school players to watch:
Austin Kubitza, RHP, Colleyville Heritage: At 6-5, projects as a hard-throwing right-hander, but has committed to play at Rice.
Tyler Nurdin, LHP, Fort Worth Paschal: Throws in the low 90s, could be taken on Day 2. Signed with Texas State.
Brian Ragira, OF, Arlington Martin: First-round talent could fall because of a commitment to Stanford and having Scott Boras as an adviser.
Tony Rizzotti, RHP, Arlington Martin: TCU signee has a good fastball and breaking pitch, but some scouts believe he's raw.
Noah Syndergaard, RHP, Mansfield Legacy: A big right-hander with a fastball that has reached 98 mph. Signed with Dallas Baptist.
Chase Underhill, RHP, Haltom: Projects well at 6-foot-5 with a fastball in the low 90s. Signed with Grayson College.
Area college prospects:
Michael Choice, OF, UT-Arlington
Chad Comer, C, UT-Arlington
Matt Curry, INF, TCU
Paul Gerrish, RHP, TCU
Bryan Holaday, C, TCU
