Need advice from my “new” HSB Web Family.

My son is currently recovering from a severe broken left ankle suffered on November 1, was in a cast till March 1, and has been in rehab for the last two weeks. He is progressing very well. Even his physical therapist has said he is further along than expected. However, three-quarters of his high school varsity season will probably be lost due to his injury, but he is determined to be ready for the last 7-8 games of the regular season (early May) and possibly the high school playoffs. God willing.

He is a senior 6-0, 185, RHP/OF who has attended numerous PG and Baseball Factory showcases, along with several college baseball camps, receiving very good scouting reports. His FB has been clocked at 86MPH with an 11-5 curveball mixed with a good changeup. He has projectable velocity and good upside. At the plate he is an aggressive hitter with a quick bat who hits hard line drives to all fields. He has received some interest from some DI schools, with more interest from DII and DII schools. However, he will soon come to a crossroad and will have to make some serious decisions. I feel his injury, in some ways, has put many schools off, but remarkably, some DII and DIII schools still have expressed a strong interest in him. These are some very good DII and DIII schools that look to be a good fit, both academically and athletically, but he has also considered the JUCO route; to use the time he lost to work on his game, get back into top baseball shape, get stronger, and perhaps test the DI waters one more time. My question is this. Has anyone on the HSBBW been in a similar situation or had a player or son with the same predicament? What were your options and what path did you pursue? As a parent, I can only offer love, counseling, and support, but ultimately, he will have to make the choice on what path to take. Your advice would be most appreciated. Thanks.

vandalfanatic - welcome to the hsbbweb Smile It sounds to me like your son has many options which is a good thing. Since he has already showcased, the injury shouldn't hold him back from finding a nice home at the next level. Reading between the lines a bit, it sounds like playing for a D1 is quite important. Thus, the JUCO route might make a lot of sense if a satisfactory D1 offer is not forthcoming.

One thing to consider about the Division he plays at is whether or not the team is competitive. Thus, would it be a better experience if your son played on a D2 or D3 team that was known for going into the playoffs and competing at the highest levels of those divisions. Contrast that to possibly sitting the bench at a high level D1 or playing for a D1 that has no chance at winning. I think focusing on D1 only however could possibly rob your son of a very rewarding academic and/or baseball experience.

CD brings up a good point. There is some overlap in player talent and program quality levels of D1/D2/D3 programs. Some top D2's and D3's are gonna blow the doors of lower level D1's, imho. My priorities would be school quality, program quality, coaching situation, expense, location, climate, then athletic division.
