My son just received the brochure for the Stanford All Star camp. After reading all that there is about this camp on this site, thanks to great suggestions,
I think he should go and we should send the money ASAP because evidently it fills up quickly.
It is far and expensive. The same weekend we have Selectfest here in NJ a showcase that has gotten a pretty good reputation here. Any thoughts on which might be better? My son is a junior LHP. If anyone has knowledge of both of these events or more info on who goes to Stanford that would be very helpful.
Thanks.

My son is also a junior LHP and will be at the Stanford All-Star camp. Being from the West Coast, I'm not familiar with the SelectFest event but I can tell you the Stanford All-Star Camp is the hardest in the country to get into.. it might already be too late, I don't know.

Does your son want to play out of his area? If so I believe it would be a high-exposure event for him.
Yes, my son is interested in going out of state but not necessarily CA. But I understand that many schools, including East Coast schools attend this camp. Around here Selecfest is a big deal and he is hesitant to miss it.It is a private showcase. But I have heard such amazing things about the Stanford Camp that I think it will be an all around good experience, if he gets in.
We sent our application and money last week. He has been emailing with the Stanford coach- the automated emails. The ones that ask for lots of information. And he received a letter and the application in the mail. So I hope it is not too late.
Is your son definitely going?
We got what looked like " a you have been selected to participate letter", but perhaps that's what everyone gets.
Let me know if you have already gotten accepted!
thanks!
SD,

That's a tough one. The answer is yes.

You need to first be a quality ballplayer, and I'm assuming you are or you wouldn't be asking. If you're not sure, get an honest opinion from a scout or college coach.

Then, get yourself into high-profile showcases or events where you can be seen. How old are you? If you are 16 and from San Diego try to get on a team that is going to the Junior Olympics (I believe there is a San Diego coach named "Skipper Dan" who advertises for players on this site.. use the find function) or Junior Fall Classic in Peoria. Or try to get an invite to PG's National Underclass Showcase. Lastly, have a scout or coach e-mail them. Good luck.

This is how my son earned his invitation. He wrote the obligatory letter to Coach Stotz (sample here) announcing his interest in Stanford baseball. FWIW, this was genuine interest. Included with that letter was a letter of recommendation by a coach from a highly regarded select team with a national reputation.

When the baseball secretary receives your letter she will add your name to the Stanford Baseball database of potential recruits, and standard operating procedures will return to you a questionnaire that you need to fill in and return asap. The questionnaire will include inquiries about your grades and PSAT/SAT scores.

I think (this is just my speculation) that someone in the staff reviews the GPA & PSAT numbers and projects how successful a student you can be at Stanford. If that projetcs positively, then they evaluate your baseball skills for fit into the camp.

Obviously, this is not the only way to get invited. Boys local to the Bay Area may have more direct communications than boys in TX. My son was never seen by any Stanford coaches prior to the start of camp.

If you are invited, I cannot encourage you strongly enough to attend. I was quite skeptical as it was a little expensive. In the end, my son earned enough attention to be a Stanford recruit for a short while before he dropped off their list. Several other schools (highly regarded institutions) recruited my son based on his performance at the Stanford camp, including the school & coach for whom he plays now.
dbgfan, that is really helpful information and is how my son got invited too (i.e., he wrote the first letter).

The only thing I'm not sure is right, is whether they really check SAT/GPA for the camp? I am sure they do to start recruiting for Stanford, but I believe that there may be NCAA rules that make it a requirement that they allow basically open enrollment in the camp? I heard that but I don't know it for sure, but I'm not sure they exclude anyone from the camp based upon academic credentials.

They don't eliminate applicants based on academics, or my own son wouldn't have been accepted into their camp. That being said, this camp definitely applies more to high academic acheivers as they have many coaches from some of the best academic institutions in the country working that week. My son made good connections with some coaches from jucos and schools that aren't as stringent academically, but for the really good student who is also an accomplished player, this is definitely the place to go between your junior and senior year....if you can get in.
An e-mail JUST came across from Coach Stotz and we can finally breathe a sigh of relief. The kid is in and we can enjoy some time in our old home State again this summer.

Hope you've all got your info waiting in your in-box as well!

Definitely looking forward to meeting websters at the camp (though when my son is pitching, you'll find me wandering off to a far corner of the stadium to become a sort of bubble-boy til it's all over) Eek
In the same mall as Oasis, there is a diner/breakfast place called Hobees. Friendly and good food. Son, P, went to All Star Camp last summer and I spent a fair amount of time in Hobees drinking coffee and reading the paper.

Also went for dinner at Cafe Del Sol - 1010 Doyle Street, Menlo Park (@2.5 miles from Stanford). Great and authentic Mexican food (at least like food we were familiar with when we lived in Tucson a million years ago).

Bordeaux would be your expert, however. It is in her backyard (or sunken diamond).

I can't believe how far our son has come since last summer or how fast the time has gone. Enjoy!

Hobee's is across El Camino and Oasis is up El Camino a mile or two. But maybe there is another Hobee's near the O too?

Nope, no Hobees near the "O".
Borrone's is close to the Oasis, on the El Camino in Menlo Park. It is a fine spot with lots of outdoor seating for coffee and great, inexpensive food. During the summer, it is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and is always crowded. I love to take my wife there...because it keeps her away from Bloomie's, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus and all the other places in the Stanford Shopping Center.
Also, another fine watering hole...that I hear is quite good Big Grin is the Old Pro. It is newly remodelled in downtown Palo Alto, on Ramona. It is a bit closer than the "O". Great sports bar with more TV's than you can count, good food and very nice people. Again, I don't know much about the Oasis and Old Pro other than what I hear.

I am not sure which fields they will use this year. Not all the games are at Stanford, and they play pretty late into the night..last games end around 10-10:30pm. If they use St Francis, which I believe they did last summer, it is a pretty good drive from the campus. When everyone has information, I am sure the locals can even provide other "watering holes" close to the various venues. We can also provide driving directions to avoid the shopping venues. Wink

re the watering holes in the S.F. area for men only?

Well Bum honey, I just don't really know the answer to this! Confused What is your definition of a watering hole? MY definition is a nice coffee house with the NY Times in large supply, or a healthy smoothie place. Around here, those are co-ed. Not being a consumer of alcohol, I wouldn't be able to answer your question as to other types of "watering holes" Big Grin
Bordeaux,

No, I only know of the Kobees that you refer to. When I checked the address of the Oasis and of Kobees on line, I thought that they were in the same mall. My bad. Thanks for the save.

Krakatoa,

Staying in the dorm will give your son a chance to bond with his teammates. Although he is going as an individual, I would almost bet that they look at how the players interact with their teammate on the field.

I also think that our son was better able to decompress with the friends he made in the dorms than he would have with me. It made the experience no less serious, but a whole lot more fun for him. Truth is, I probably had more fun, also. It gave me a chance to explore the area and eat at places he would not have wanted to try.

Enjoy! Our son always dreamed of playing for Stanford. Didn't happen for both athletic and academic reasons, but he has (or had) the photo of himself on the mound of the Sunken Diamond as his facebook photo. It was an experience that I think he will always treasure.
Oh well in that case: Here's the list:
On campus (Tresidder Union): Peet's Coffee (but limited hours) and Jamba Juice
Town and Country Village (across El Camino from Sunken Diamond): Same as above, but regular hours
Stanford Avenue/El Camino, just south end of campus: Starbucks

There about about 5 other Starbucks in the vicinity of campus: On California Avenue, on University Avenue, at the Stanford Shopping Center (there is also a Palo Alto Roasting Company coffee place there) and in Menlo Park on El Camino and Palo Alto on El Camino.

We are not QUITE like Seattle yet, but close. Have fun everyone!

(I don't remember anything about the camp, sorry--)

Okay, we just got the word. He's in!!
Thank you to all who have encouraged us to go to this camp.
It will be my son's first time in CA. Stanford is a dream and now we will be there. Hope to meet you all.
California sounds so good!
It's 14 degrees here today! With winds, it's something like 5 below.
First scrimmage on Saturday!
And jrm. I believe all of the ivys and many other schools attend.I know Boston College and Princeton have told us that they will be there. USC will not!
