My son a 6’6” RHP has been getting recruiting type e-mails from Stanford. He attended their camp last year. This year, he had planned to attend the premier New Jersey showcase, Selectfest which happens on the same weekend as this year's Stanford camp. This conflict exists every year between Selectfest and Stanford. That is why we chose Stanford last year and plan to attend Selectfest this year.

After some emails to Stanford’s coach, it is clear that the coach wants my son to come to their camp again this year despite the conflict with Selectfest. However, based on last years traveling experience, we know that flying coast to coast to pitch at two showcases within 4 days would definitely put my son at a disadvantage.

Looking at the schools attending Selectfest, we can not just dismiss that showcase. If we do not fly coast to coast on the weekend of June 25-28 is Stanford out of the picture? My son has the academics for Stanford so it is hard to close that door if he is on their radar.
Any advice?

If your son wants to go to Stanford, by all means go to their camp. Coaches don't give our invites to just anybody. This could seal the deal for your son. We just went through a similar situation with another D1 school in Ca. and we went to the camp and my son is now committed for the '09 season. Stanford is one of the top 5 schools academically in the U.S. so you can't go wrong there.

this is only an opinion, because I don't pretend to have anywhere near as much info as others who have been down this path. But Stanford has obviously already seen your son and likes him. Going to the camp and doing well might seal the deal, for sure. But it may not be the only way.

I wouldn't be afraid to skip the camp, as long as you have some other way to have your son in front of them at some point this summer.

There aren't dozens and dozens of 6'6" pitchers who have Stanford academics.
6'6" is one thing, potential high 80's or better is another although the 6'6" guys tend to be given more leeway relative to present velocity. Do you have showcase results showing that he's a potential Major D1 guy? Or did the e-mails from Stanford's coach say that he felt he had a good chance of playing at Stanford and they just wanted another look?

Kids improve at different rates and I'm just guessing at what Stanford is looking for but I'd expect with a 6'6" RHP rising junior they'd be looking for currently working 85 on a Stalker or better out of kids they're really interested in. That doesn't mean they wouldn't be interested in someone throwing less if they felt he was projectable and like I said I'm just guessing. You left his velocity out of your post.
