I thought it would be interesting to know when everyone officially starts their high school season. In my area public schools start the last official week in February and private schools start officially on March 1st. I'm sure though there are drastic differences regarding start dates depending on what part of the country you're from. Please post yours below:

Kentucky starts on the 15th of February. Yet, the first games aren't until March 27th. KHSAA has a rule that baseball can't, officially start until the last basketball game in the state championship ends. Day or two afterwards. Weird rule, but put in place so that players that do both can have a chance to play.

What a difference weather can make. I saw the start date for MN and then looked at my son's HS. They have their 21st game scheduled the day you open in MN.

ILVBB,

Wow, that is a huge difference...21st game!

Of course colleges here in MN are at the mercy of the weather, too. My son's college team starts their spring with a pre-season trip to FL in early March, and some years they have not even gotten to set foot on an outdoor field before the trip.

We all talk about the realities of recruiting, but I can't help think about how much different development is with good weather.
Indoor facilities will become the great equilizer. Even though high school tryouts don't start until March, my son's travel team just starting working out to get the kids ready for high school. Even though the high school season may be shorter, between school and travel he'll play eighty games.

First scrimage game is listed as
Feb. 14th.... that date is important for another reason, but I can't recall, oh yeah now I remember........that is the date my beautiful wife is going to start talking to me again. She stopped talking to me last year when I forgot Valentines day. I won't do that again. I need to find out when valentines day is this year......

For all of you warm weather folks that have already started official practice, what do kids that play winter sports do? Or are there no kids that play basketball (probably not hockey where you guys are) and baseball??

SoCal first official HS Baseball practice is Monday Feb 11th. Official Basketball end is Friday Feb 8th. So kids get the week-end off. Smile

With playoffs (Varsity only) some kids could miss the first two weeks of practice, which can be a problem, particularly for marginal players.

For the most part, if you are playing baseball you are probably not playing a winter sport. There is one kid who plays basketball who is a pitcher and he will come out after practice and do a bullpen several times a week until basketball is done.
Believe it or not, we do have ice hockey in Texas.

My younger son plays for the high school varsity team but it is a "club" sport (lacrosse & rugby are also club sports) not a UIL sponsored sport. We have tryouts, a paid coach, and the parents have to absorb all the costs. Grades are reported to the coach so the "No pass No play" rule is in effect. He could not play baseball and ice hockey but he does play football also.

The travel ice hockey teams are better than the high school teams.

In Texas, I would say there are several kids that play football and baseball. Basketball overlaps by about two weeks into the start of baseball practice and scrimmages. (Unless that team goes into the playoffs) So, those kids that play hoops can miss out on some important practice/scrimmage time.
With that being said, I know of several kids that are D1 athletes that played high school basketball.
One guy I know took his team to the regional finals his senior year as a point guard, then went on to start at SS on the baseball team. He is now playing D1 baseball at Texas A&M.
Oh wow haha, a tournament in three weeks! I couldn't imagine playing baseball the first week in February (aside from long toss inside), the wind chill this morning was -20, talk about a cold walk into school.

Seems to me that our basketball doesn't get over until early March, with the state tournament being played the last few days of March, early April. Depending on how far the bball team goes, some important kids for our baseball team could join the team a day or so before the first game....not to say they won't practice with us before in their spare time (if they have any).
Here in Nebraska tryouts are February 25. Not sure when practice will start but probably somewhere around March 1. The first game is March 15. We don't get a lot of games in during the spring season as we can get snow well into April. More often it is rain and the weather is often cold. This is probably why my son is so interested in going south for college.

Basketball and track would interfere with Baseball in our area. No one on the baseball team plays either. A couple of kids tried it in the past but ended up asking the basketball coach for a release two weeks after baseball practice started. They were not starters on the basketball team so the coach released them.
