As an umpire in Missouri, I've wondered about this for a few years, and I'm hoping some coaches here have a good reason. High school Varsity games primarily start at 4pm, while the sub-Varsity games start at 4:15pm. Usually, the Varsity and Freshman teams will play at one location (usually two separate fields), while the JV teams play at the other school's field.
That said, does any one know why Varsity starts earlier? Any reasons I come up with doesn't explain why JV and Freshmen start later. These are the reasons I've thought:
The Varsity team could pull players from the other squad if they were short. Since the JV teams are usually at the other location, this doesn't make sense. Why would a coach grab from the Freshman team for a Varsity game?
Extra 15 minutes to play. Why not also start the sub-Varsity games at 4pm, too?
Umpire(s) can be moved to Varsity game before sub-Varsity starts. I doubt scheduling has ever used availability of umpires as a factor.
So, coaches (or anyone with the knowledge), why does the Varsity game start 15 minutes earlier?
