That's gonna be a tough one to call this year. In any event, I'm awful happy to say that Frederick County has a team in the state tournament in EVERY division this year. I guess we have some pretty decent baseball out here in the sticks. I'm really proud because there are some kids on those teams that I'm very fond of and I wish them all the best.

1A Catoctin
2A Walkersville
3A Frederick
4A Linganore

The Walkersville girls are in the softball state tournament as well. First time since 1999 that both are there, and they both won titles that year.
Larry,
That's quite remarkable. You're good so far. I understand the kid that Frederick is going to face has been virtually unhittable so far. We'll see how it goes.

I'm sad that the season is over for my Lions and Lancers. There are some very special seniors who are graduating and I'm going to miss them. But they've all had a great high school career and I wish them all the best in the future.
It is funny, I used to think I could evaluate players and tell you which team was going to win. I was rarely ever correct.

Nowadays, I evaluate players and the teams they play on. I'm much better at looking at the whole package and figuring who will progress...especially now that I'm more of a gray-beard???

I'm sticking with SP over QO in the 4A Championship.

I have a good feeling about Frederick this week. If they don't try to do too much and hit the ball where it is pitched, they'll be just fine.

As for the Lions and the Lancers, they have both had fantastic seasons. I was a little concerned for both of them when I saw how the brackets were laid out for each. I hope the seniors remember this run, and the youngsters get hungry for more in the future.
Al,

Eastern Tech seems to be playing it's best baseball late in the season. Their weakness is that they don't have a overpowering pitcher and errors cost them at times. Their strengths are that they play team baseball and are a good fastball hitting team that also hits the breaking pitch well. If they don't commit errors I Think they can hang with Riverhill and pull out a win. Even though their pitchers arn't overpowering, they still have good pitching. Anyway I'm pulling for a Baltimore County team to win. Two of our stronger teams (Catonsville,Patapsco) tried to save their pitchers and wound up on the sidelines.

My picks

1a Bo Manor

Catoctin barely defeated a weak New Town team that I believe was 4w 7L going into tournament.

2a Eastern Tech

I'm biased (Baltimoe County).

3a Fallston

Frederick defeated a Towson team (5-3) that is nowhere near the talent level of Fallston. Towson I believe were 2-6 when Liebert was not pitching and a weak hitting team. Fallston is strong hitting and pitching.

4a Severna Park

Have not seen either team play but I believe Severna Park beat North County twice who I think was a very talented team.

Anyway those are my picks.

Win or lose congrats to all the teams that made it to the championship game.

Metro - You are correct - congrats should go to River Hill, they played very well in playoffs and deserve all the credit in the world. I was at the Hammond v. North Point game, the RH v. NP game, and the state championship. RH played a NP team that acted like they won the world series when they beat Hammond 9-8, then did not show up v. RH. RH did exactly what they were supposed to do, played well and won the game. NP was very excited they got a chance to play River Hill, thinking they would have a walk to the state and got burned for it.

I am not sure what you have against the Hammond Coach, he was there supporting RH at both games. Also if you do not think he is a fantastic coach, is good with the kids, supports all of Howard County baseball, and is one of the best game time strategists around - you are simply misinformed. Having played both college and professional baseball, and been a coach at the D1 level, I can speak from experience that he knows the game and can teach the game.

Once again congrats to all the kids, coaches and parents of all the state championship teams.
I believe Jeff Crosswhite brings two things; his athletic ability and desire to win. Does he have things to work on, yes. What is nice, I believe he knows that and plans on working very hard and combined with his desire, I see a kid who will do very well in college.

I really like the Parco kid off of River Hill. Not so much as shortstop, but I truly believe he can become a big time pitcher. You got to love his size, his long loose arm.

Sounds like Eastern Tech gave them a game though! Congrats to them also. Apologize, but I have been out of the loop with them since Ryan Rivers.

Bottom line, I love this game.

Thanks for the opportunity,

I like Crosswhite's ability very much. I had him on the gun in the state championship at 86-88 with a decent breaking pitch. What concerns me about him is his attitude. I have spoken to several of his coaches and ALL of them have some questions. Also, he is not playing this summer. Could be a red flag, but he is definitely a D1 talent. I believe he is going to start out at NW Shoals in Alabama.
Was curious if anyone gunned the pitcher from Fredrick. From where I was sitting his fastball seemed to have the best pop out of all the pitchers that threw that night. Although his breaking pitches seemed to be inconsistant. Not sure about his name. I was watching to see if there were any guns out during the games but was surprised to not see any.

I believe Jimmy Lanning pitched the championship game for Frederick. I wasn't there, I'm just going on what I heard. I think Jimmy is going to Salisbury in the fall. Not sure about his velocity. I haven't seen him throw in two years.

I'm going to miss watching Brady Wilson play. He used to hit in the lead off position for Frederick and he was really difficult to pitch to. He could hit off speed as well as fastballs, and it didn't matter where you pitched him. He also had great plate discipline. He was a very difficult out. It took a long time to figure him out. He was so fast on the bases that he always made you very aware of him. He has a great attitude as well. WVU is getting a real gem.
